My catalog mentions a narrow j and stamp world mentions 'narrow cents.' Is this stamp either of those.

Your stamp is neither of those (actually one stamp). Yours appears to be SG 17.
Scroll down to page 16 on the link below. Your stamps matches those on rows 1-5. The "narrow cents" stamps start on row 6. The stamp you were hoping for (narrow J, which also happens to be narrow cents) is in row 6, on the right hand side.
