I was about to separate this pair when I looked more closely at the postmark. Glad I stopped to look. I'm keeping these together!

One, a great catch. I really like strange and odd cancels. Two, why would you want to separate them in the first place? I'm not an expert so I am asking because of curiosity... I do not think I would ever pull apart pairs, or larger connected stamps, but this is just me. I really like pairs.

You will see a lot of cancels with advertising for telephones on Irish mail.
The post and telephone were the same company up till a few years ago
here's is a article I cut and paste from wikipedia

An Post, the Irish postal administration, came into being in 1984 when, under the terms of the Postal & Telecommunications Services Act, 1983, the postal services of the Department of Posts & Telegraphs (P&T) were divided between two new organizations: An Post and Telecom Éireann (the latter being the telecommunications operator now called Eircom). At its inception, during the early years of the Irish Free State, the Department of Posts & Telegraphs was the country's largest department of state, and its employees (most of them postmen) constituted the largest sector of the civil service. Prior to this the postal service in Ireland had been under the control of the General Post Office that was established in 1660

This is indeed a source of internal debate for me. The short answer is I want a single stamp to fit in the little square on my album.

Also, if I put the pair in, it won't leave space for other stamps in the series next to it. In this case, since it was a more interesting cancel, I kept the pair in put it in an empty area of the page. I suppose I could pairs on the facing page and add a sheet of interleaving. How would you do it?

IrishJack - Thanks for the additional image and explanation - at least the post office wasn't trying to put themselves out of business (as the U.S. post appears to be doing)!

Hello mrprgrmr. I sure did not mean to imply anything negative by my post if you took it that way. I just know personally I would not separate the stamps. I think it in general terms it makes it easier to identify especially if a rarer issue and authentic. These are things I am still learning as well. As far as placing in albums...I have a mess here and lots of work to do so I'm not sure how I will be displaying these items as of yet.

I find the slogans pretty funny. It's as if the P.O. is persuading people to call instead of mailing letters, use the Telephone, Don't Mail Letters!

sirruspoe - no offense taken. I'm genuinely curious how others display their pairs. Perhaps many keep these separately in stock books. That would be one advantage to storing stamps in stock books instead of printed pages - I just can't go that way as I still love filling spaces!
