Willibrord (c. 658-739) was a Northumbrian missionary saint, known as the "Apostle to the Frisians," who in 698 established the Abbey of Echternach in what is now eastern Luxembourg. Saint Peter Claver, S.J. (1581-1654) was a Spanish Jesuit priest and missionary who maintained a ministry in Colombia for 40 years, and is the patron saint of slaves, the Republic of Colombia, and ministry to African Americans. Here is an image of a stamp depicting the saint preaching to a group of slaves, designed by French artist Pierrette Lambert (1928- ), engraved by Claude Haley (1923-1988), and issued by Monaco on November 12, 1979 to commemorate the Red Cross, Scott No. 1189, plus an image of a painting of Saint Peter Claver with a similar theme.
Mother Teresa (1910-1997) was a Roman Catholic religious sister and missionary, and the recipient of the 1979 Nobel Peace Prize; in 2003, she was beatified as "Blessed Teresa of Calcutta." Here is an image of a stamp featuring a portrait of Mother Teresa, designed after original artwork by Italian actress, photojournalist and sculptor Luigina "Gina" Lollobrigida (1927- ), printed by photogravure (Courvoisier, S.A.), and issued by San Marino on March 22, 1996 as a EUROPA stamp, Scott No. 1349, plus a photo of Mother Teresa. Antoine-Frédéric Ozanam (1813-1853) was a French scholar who co-founded the Conference of Charity, later known as the Society of Saint Vincent de Paul, and was beatified by Pope John Paul II in 1997. Here is an image of a stamp featuring a portrait of Blessed Frédéric, designed and engraved by French artist Yves Beaaujard (1939- ), and issued by France on September 11, 1999, Scott No. 2738, Y&T No. 3281, plus an image of a charcoal sketch (1833) of Frédéric Ozanam by French painter and poet Anne-François-Louis Janmot (1814-1892) which was probably the model for this stamp's design.
Pauline-Marie Jaricot (1799-1862) was a French laywoman and the founder of the Society of the Propagation of the Faith and the Living Rosary Association. Here is an image of a stamp designed after a portrait of Jaricot in the Church of Saint-Nizier in Lyon, France, printed by photogravure, and issued by Vatican City on July 5, 1962 as one of a set of three similar stamps commemorating the centenary of her death, Scott No. 340, plus a YouTube link to a video celebrating the legacy of the Venerable Pauline-Marie Jaricot.
Happy Birthday to Father Damien (aka Saint Damien of Molokai, born Jozef De Veusterborn, 1840-1889), a Roman Catholic priest and missionary from Belgium venerated for his ministry in the Kingdom of Hawaii to people with leprosy (also known as Hansen's disease) quarantined by the government on the island of Molokai. Here is an image of a stamp featuring a portrait of Saint Damien, and depicting two people afflicted with leprosy, designed by Belgian artist Jean Van Noten (1903-1982), printed by photogravure (Courvoisier, S.A.), and issued by Rwanda on January 31, 1966 as one of four stamps in a set publicizing World Leprosy Day, Scott No. 143, plus an image of a rare photograph of Father Damien taken shortly before his death.
Joan of Arc (c. 1412-1431), nicknamed "The Maid of Orléans," was a warrior heroine of France who was canonized as a Roman Catholic saint in 1920. Here is an image of a stamp depicting the Joan of Arc National Monument and the Church of Saint Joan of Arc in Rouen, designed by French architect Louis Gerald Arretche (1905-1991), and the beginning of a quote from French novelist, art theorist and Minister of Cultural Affairs André Malraux DSO (1901-1976) inscribed on the church: "Ô Jeanne, sans sépulcre et sans portrait, toi qui savais que le tombeau des héros est le cœur des vivants." The 1685 revocation by King Louis XIV of the Edict of Nantes precipitated an exodus of Huguenots (Protestants) from France; Protestant civil rights were not restored in the country until 1788. The Huguenot cross is a Christian religious symbol of the evangelical reformed faith. Saint Anthony is the patron saint of finding things or lost people, and in art he is often represented holding the Baby Jesus. Jan Hus (c. 1369-1415) was a Czech priest, philosopher, early Christian reformer and Master at Charles University in Prague. After his execution in 1415, the followers of Hus's religious teachings (known as Hussites) rebelled against their Roman Catholic rulers and defeated five consecutive papal crusades between 1420 and 1431 in what became known as the Hussite Wars.
