Just to point that the chappel depicted on the 1975 Spanish stamp is not devoted to Saint Mark. "Marcús" was the name of a Catalan richman who in the XII century gave money on his will to build a "hospital" (a poor's hostel) nearby the North gate of Barcelona. This chappel was part of the said hostel (that has not reached our days) and was devoted to Our Lady of the Guide, patroness of postmen. From the door of the chappel, the priest blessed the outgoing post. It's a symbol of the Catalan Post. Hence, the presence of this building on the issue that commemorates the 125 years of the first Spanish stamp. By the way, engraved by a Catalan artist, Bartomeu Coromina.

Cursus - Great research on the Marcús chapel stamp! Thanks for sharing. Vasco de Quiroga (c. 1470-1565) was a lawyer, judge, and the first bishop of Michoacán, Mexico who restored order to the Michoacán area which had been ravaged by rebellions and unrest. His strategy was to relocate indigenous populations into Hospital-towns called Republicas de Indios, organized after principles derived from Thomas More's Utopia. Here is an image of a stamp depicting Vasco de Quiroga and Thomas More, designed after a mural by Mexican painter and architect Juan O'Gorman (1905-1982), printed by photogravure, and issued by Mexico on July 10, 1971 to commemorate the 500th anniversary of the bishop's birth, Scott No. 1032. - nethryk |
