Devas are Hindu gods incorporated into Buddhism as protectors against evil spirits. Here is an image of a stamp depicting a fierce-looking Deva King (aka Niozo), worshiped as one of Okinawa's protector gods, designed after artwork in the Torin-ji Buddhist temple on Ishigaki island, Okinawa, printed by photogravure, and issued by Ryukyu Islands on December 1, 1971, Scott No. 221.

scifi7 - I would agree that stamps depicting aspects of the world's religions are fascinating to study. And many thanks for posting those "enlightening" details about your Thailand stamps!

Here is an image of another stamp featuring a portrait of Pope John Paul II, designed after a photograph, engraved by Czeslaw Slania, and issued by Poland on May 9, 2000, Scott No. 3520, Michel No. 3830.

The Pou Gneu Nha Gneu Legend is a creation legend which includes the domestication of a lion named Sing Keo Sing Kham. People of the Luang Prabang region hold processions with characters of the legend. Engraved by Roger Fenneteaux.

The Garuda are enormous predatory birds endowed with intelligence and social organization. Engraved by André Frères.

Hanuman, the White Monkey, is a demon-fighter and a central character in the Indian epic Ramayana. Engraved by Jean Pheulpin.

Nang Teng One Legend. All I know about this legend is that it obviously includes a serious difference of opinion about something! Also engraved by Jean Pheulpin.

I see stamps of all religions posted here, so I will add some India stamps showing the Buddha (issued in 2007)
Is there another thread showing Buddhism related stamps only?

I don't think so Carebear,
this thread has many donated by Nethryk,
I have wanted to start a thread, then decided against it
due to the vast array of branches of Buddhism.

You may try the "search function" within SCF

AnthonyUK - Superb Laos stamps; thanks for posting.

Your missing evangelist is Saint John. All four stamps in this set were designed after sketches by Agathe Bagnoud from the 15th century wood carvings in St. Oswald's Church, Zug, engraved by Heinrich Heusser (? -1979), printed on granite paper, and issued by Switzerland on September 18, 1961. Here is an image of the stamp depicting St. John with a winged eagle (per the stamp catalogue description - looks more like a scalped peahen to me ), Scott No. 409, SG No. 653.
