Now that I have your attention,
What state would this refer to please?
Looks like a bear and a star.

What is shown is a sequoia, of which there are two species; the redwood (Sequoia sempervirens) and the Giant Sequoia (Sequoia gigantea). The sequoias were named in commemoration of the Cherokee Indian named Sequoiah who develop the first alphebet used by his tribe. The tallest tree is the Redwood whereas the most massive is the Giant Sequoia. It has been 42 years since I worked as a forester, so my identification is not as strong now, but as far as the image is concerned, I am leaning toward it being the Giant Sequoia mainly due to the fluting of the bole.
By the way, the honor for the OLDEST tree now is the bristlecone pine, some of which were 300 years old when the pyramids were built! Here is a link discussing the bristle cone pines - http://sonic.net/bristlecone/

Sadly, we're losing some of these natural wonders like this recent news story of a 3500 year old cypress tree in Florida that was destroyed by arson:

Nice yarns, thank you.
enjoyed the dendrochronology meander,
I was fascinated by that during the GB "Time team" episodes
where they use that to date structures.
