Here's an interesting proposal for a US Space Exploration Stamp featuring the on-again, off-again planet Pluto:

I think it would be great to feature all the planets with the most current high resolution photographs we have including Pluto!

Here's the latest update of 02/26/2013 on the stamp proposal:

http://www.collectspace.com/news/news-022613a.html

I'm surprised to read that the USPS has given a written response that they will be considering the stamp. Usually one is not given the luxury to know whether or not a stamp is under consideration until it's approved for release.

This reminds me of a joke about Pluto, but it's pretty rude, so I think I'll keep my fingers quiet.

I must say that this is a very interesting design. I hope it gets through and into production. These I'd certainly buy for some out of this world postage! (pardon the pun)

When they said Pluto was not a planet but a large space rock, we went "poor, poor Pluto!". Now a stamp for the little space rock with a nice design to boot. Having a series with hi res of all the plants including earth would rock. Pardon my pun. DD

This is crazy! One of the best stamp designs so far this year, and it is not even official!

This, a planet? No way!

Very attractive design, although its annoying we know more about this stamp which should come out in 2015 than we do about those coming out later this year.

Seems similar to the project Messenger stamp issues last year. Would be a good series to have a few like those.

I wonder if there could be a good series done for the space shuttles along this line. If only because I used to watch them launch. :)

Well, I don't know if the USPS still has a 2015 Pluto stamp planned or not, but according to National Geographic, a stamp has been sent to Pluto on the New Horizons probe, this one, to be exact.

It was sent along with a few other oddments, such as some of Pluto discoverer Clyde Tombaugh's ashes, a Florida state quarter, and the like. That particular stamp is never coming back to Earth, of course, but it would be a heck of a collector's item if it did!

I bet we'll see a new stamp, but not until the mission is a success. July 14 is the fly-by date. I'd give it a couple weeks or so after that and I bet we'll see one.

Edited to add that I'd think it would cost more than 29 cents to mail a 1000 lb probe to Pluto! No wonder the USPS is going broke!

That would be great to have a surprise Pluto stamp. Use the best imagery from the probe and it would be a fun stamp to see. I really liked the $3 Mars Rover Sojourner stamp from 1997. I have not heard of a proposed stamp yet. You could have a lot of fun with Pluto and Charon orbiting around it somehow.

I think only the OP is calling Pluto a planet; the news items are, well, non-designatory.

Hopefully the mission is a rousing success, with lots of good (and surprising) imagery of Pluto and all 5 of its moons. Personally I'd like to see the USPS issue several designs on a mini-sheet, "forever" denominated, of course, not some collector-gouging $5 values. I don't know how long it takes to design stamps and get them into production, but with modern techniques I'd think they could do it pretty quickly. If they're still thinking about doing something, they probably have a general template already picked out, they'd just need to add the pictures and run with it.
