You can buy it alone, if you're running Windows. On a Mac, I would need a Filemaker based solution or something open source. |

Interesting project. I would like to see it get off the ground and like it was said, see if some standard information could "pop up" after entering the id number. |

free office look-alike openoffice - has a database (base) which is supposed to be MS access accessible. Could you run tests under that database?

Hi ncbuckeye,
I looked Openoffice and also MYSQL.
1. I am in initial level of building Database. Means ... right kind of table with right attributes (Fields) Collectors would like to be included so that all information can be properly stored in Physical as well as Logical Database (Schema). So I need Feedback regarding Data fields,I proceed to build final database. 2. after making tables,I have to make proper relations. (to avoid duplication etc ) 3. Appropriate Entry Input Screens and flow of Data Entries. ( may be manual or automatic depending reality)
These Screen shots what I Uploaded here are just what I thought data fields to be included. Some I might be missing.. or have not come across at all.I research in Books, Catalogs,Magazines, articles,Philatelic Journals like American Society Philatelic, Canada, UNO and many other Societies sites,Wikipedia etc.
I humbly request to feedback for this.from Experts and Collector with years of experience. Sure Once Database (Relational) it can be tailored in many ways. e.g. Openoffice, Google Doc, MySQL, SQLExpress, etc.
These Screens by no means full Fledged ready Database yet. Please have careful look at it let me know, feedback will be highly appreciated.

tikithindi, you are creating a super database. I retired as a corporation VP responsible for midrange (unix) database systems (Oracle, IBM DB2, SQL Server), so I know and appreciate the effort you have done (as well as what is remaining.) If you have any technical questions, feel free to email me. |

Hi ncbuckeye,
Thank you very much for encouragement. As I said before I am retired Anesthesiologist. Practiced in Washington DC and Virginia area. As hobby started computer around 1976. While creating other Databases mostly Medical related, I thought of Database for my other hobby of Collection since 1955.
This is early start point by no means it is yet full Database. am trying to get feedback for other more experience Collectors. Which will hasten process of Database Creation. I thought through Screen Shots I may probably give better presentation of Data Fields. I am doing just for Hobby. I appreciate your offer of technical help I know am going need it.
1. Part I Personal Use Database. 2. Part II Server Based ( I am scratching my Head right now ) will require lot of help support and encouragement.
Please look Screen shots and have feedback and comments. Second better Screenshots I created Album On Photobucket which better to see all Data fields. On Photo bucket Album Name is Screen Shots2 S1102.photobucket.com/albums/g442/tikithindi see it and comment PLEASE. Thanks all

I have LibreOffice installed, which is what OpenOffice has turned into. I'm at a point now, where I want to track my stamps on my iPad. So, I decided to use Bento along with the Philatelist template. |

I added some of Screen shot than originally which were few. no feedback?. Layout of Data Input, Query and search could be made easy and also form for Data Entry not Cluttered. On screens I have put Data fields what I thought necessary. am I missing any ?
Errors-> Major Freaks, and Oddities that comes with your Examination of your Stamp by you.All Screenshots you can see in Photobucket Screenshot2 Album.
Spreadsheet are also underway. In that also minimal typing required.
Any opinion, comments ?

I am by now means a fan of databases for stamps. A database is only as good as the data entry. I have not enough time for my collections itself, how should I find time to enter the items into a data base.
I appreciate the efforts done by the various programmers.., but most products will serve the purpose of the programmers only. There have been numerous programs out in the past 20 years, the majority is already buried in cyberspace. |

Hi tikithindi, Your database looks pretty good to me, and I can see you have invested a great deal of time in it; well done!
I hope you won't mind if I make a comment. The input allowance for the watermark on a stamp does not appear to be sufficiently explicit to me. It's true that stamps come with and without watermarks; but within the watermarked category there are many varieties (which can vary considerably in value). A picture of the app. watermark would help.
Some issues (for example early GB stamps) were printed on a great variety of watermarked papers. In addition there are the occasions when the paper was inserted wrongly, resulting in sideways or inverted watermarks.
If I have made a wrong interpretation of your data base , I apologize.
cheers

Hi Alex, Alex Please you do not have to apologize. Its a Great Point. I appreciate will include watermark No,WmkImage. same way sec. mark, Tagging like phosphor,Fluorescence,no bands, graphite lines etc. Errors of wmk e.g. inverted, sideways, marginal, missing color, wrong Paper, etc.also Errors, Freaks,Oddities, Counterfeit, forgeries.
You are right pointing out that. Your comment was well worth Alex. I am in very early stage, long way I have to go. Let me see I can make Program where there is minimal Typing in. I may or may not be able to do am trying.
Thanks 22028 and Alex appreciate very much. Comments I appreciate.I get some missing information.
Cheers! tikithindi

Nice job,but too detailed for me in keeping track for my collection. Note tthat SQL ESpress from Microsft is free as will and iy can either be linked to Access or import information from Access.
If you have any questions just ask. |

Thanks nickmag,
appreciate very much. Before I take this to any Database Severs, e.g. SQLExpress,MySQL etc. I posted screen shots only for to find out am I missing any (Attributes) data fields for information entries. second trying to Normalize database. These cluttered Form layout Screen shots I just posted to know if any missing info. It looks very over whelming at present. Once I have normalized Database. I will try it to up scale.
again thanks nickmag and ncbuckeye.
cheers!

Hi, As I created some more tables and screen shots... I thought I would ask in general what should be in Varieties and EFOs category. As there is no clear definition of Variety in Philately. Varieties encompasses Errors ,Freaks and Oddities. tiktihindi.
