Orchids are a recurring theme on Singapore stamps & other postal items. Please show your Singapore orchid stamps, mailed covers, FDCs, maximum cards & postal stationery. Have fun.

Edited 2/9/12 This topic is now for worldwiide Orchid stamps - so please show all the orchids you have!

The first Singapore stamps to feature orchids were 4 stamps of the 1962-66 definitives :

1c Arachnis Maggie Oei. (SG 63)
This is an orchid hybrid of the Arachnis genus (Scorpion Orchids) which look a bit like scorpions or spiders. It was the first Arachnis hybrid, created in 1936 by John Laycock in Singapore.

8c Vanda Tan Chay Yan. (SG68)
Named after Tan Chay Yan, a rubber plantation merchant & philanthropist. The orchid hybrid was developed by his son & it won the Chelsea Flower Show's First Class Certificate in 1954.

12c Grammatophyllum speciosum. (SG 70)
The Giant Orchid. Also called Tiger Orchid, it is the world's largest orchid plant & is native to New Guinea, Indonesia, Malaysia & Singapore.

30c Vanda Miss Joaquim. (SG 73)
Singapore's national flower. It was named after Agnes Joaquim, a horticulturist who found this natural hybrid in Singapore. This stamp is the first of many Singapore stamps featuring this flower!

That's an interesting cover scifi7, it has the commemorative cancel as well as being postally used

The ATM stamp on the cover & postcard also contains orchids - the Vanda Miss Joaquim (in the bottom centre of the stamp)

This design was issued in 2009 to commemorate the 150th Anniversary of the Singapore Botanic Gardens, & is the only design currently available at the machines.

The design of the ATM stamp was based on the last 2 stamps of the se-tenant set issued in 2009 showing the Botanic Gardens

I wondered if those were orchids on the ATM, but my eyes aren't sharp enough. Great detail Leng, and great link to the se-tenant, those are great stamps in themselves.

Edit: I expect Fifia would love to see those stamps in the se-tenant topic.

Hi fifia nice to have your flowers. They arent orchids though
I see you have both mini sheets from the 2001 Singapore-Switzerland joint issue on flowers. The Singapore flowers are on the left :
Straits Rhododendron (top) & Yellow Saraca (bottom).
The Swiss flowers are on the right: Edelweiss (top) & Clusius' Gentian (bottom).
