On April 12, 2005 Ireland issued 5 new values of its eleventh definitive series "Native Wild Flowers". The 7c stamp (Hib. #D289/Sc #1608) depicts a fly orchid (Ophrys insectifera). From Wikipedia, "The name arises because the inflorescence resembles a fly, although it is dependent on Hymenoptera for pollination. The plants use scent to attract male wasps which pollinate the flowers as they attempt to mate with them. The scent released by the flowers mimics female sexual pheromones." |
