There have been quite a few articles on SCF about really famous stamp collectors of the world like King George V and FDR. Thought it might be interesting to start a thread on what other relatively well-known people, past and present, were/are also philatelists -particularly those we wouldn't ordinarily think of as stamp collectors. One that surprised me was Karl Rove, President Bush's senior advisor and political pundit, who collects classic US and covers.

Actor Ernest Borgnine was noted in this previous SCF thread, along with a commercial he did at one time for the US Postal Service:

...and don't forget the late actor, Karl Malden, he was not only a stamp collector, but served on the Citizen's Stamp Advisory Committee:

I watched Karl Malden and Marlon Brando last
week in the Cowboy movie "One Eyed jacks"

Partly directed by Stanley Kubrick
and featuring that beautiful woman Katy Jurado (swoon)

I reckon Karl outplayed Brando in the film,
and as always Slim Pickens is just fantastic
as a gruesome cowboy.

Still don't know what a "one eyed Jack" refers to

Being relatively new here, I can't say I have seen the other threads. I did a search and found the one that mentioned Gypsy Rose Lee, actors Gary Burghoff, Karl Malden and Ernest Borgnine, along with tennis star Maria Sharapova (not lately, I would guess).

Re: the Karl Rove comment, I think Linn's reported that a handful of APS members resigned a couple years ago when Rove made the keynote speech at the annual APS Stampshow (maybe in Richmond?)

Probably these have all been mentioned before - but for the newbie likes of me and others -
John Lennon and Freddie Mercury, of course, as kids (who didn't).
Supposedly Ron Wood, of the Rolling Stones.

Author Lawrence Block ("Hit Man" series and now Linn's columnist).

Col. Edward "Ned" Green (second purchaser of the 100-sheet of inverted Jennys).

There is no hard evidence, but I would bet "Simpsons" creator Matt Groening is - he made several stamp collecting references on the show and they all just had the feel of someone who knew the hobby.

Michigan Sen. Carl Levin

Amelia Earhart (I saw part of her collection this past summer at the U.S. National Postal Museum)

The Postal Museum has a list - which I just found after I started this post

Some website I saw said author Ayn Rand did.

Indeed she was a stamp collector. Here's the website that contains some very interesting insight into her revived interest in the hobby in her later years:

Not a "celebrity" by entertainment standards, but in the financial arena, we must add Bill Gross, of PIMCO. Here's his story:

What ? I got beat on saying Bill Gross of Pimco by 1 minute ! Like Rod I think Karl Malden was great..played in several movies with Brando ...A Streetcar named Desire for one...speaking of movies..i actually watched one with out subtitles on Netflix last night..a Canadian film...Passendaele about a Calgary regiment in Belgium during the Great War..we are all familiar with the brutality of trench warfare with the hatchets, brass knuckles etc..but Canada can do it without spending a 150 million dollars like Hollywood does !

Not sure if you were serious or not but a "One Eyed Jack" refers to the Jack of Spades and the Jack of Hearts in a standard Playing Card deck. These 2 Jacks show profiles, hence the One eye as where the Jacks of Clubs and Diamonds show full face. Also, there is a "Suicidal King" in a Deck as the King of Hearts (I believe) is the only King with the Sword through the Head.

Don't know if he was a collector, but John Sununnu, former governor of NH go got into hot water while serving as chief of staff for President Bush senior for taking a White house jet to a stamp auction in NYC. (He lost his job over it!) Sounds like a collector to me.
