Can't believe nobody has mentioned the king of Romania, a famous collector. I believe he owned (or bid on) a number of famous stamps. |

Don't forget Bruce Wayne! Quote:
"Batman" A Piece of the Action (1967)
The Green Hornet and Kato are in Gotham City to bust a counterfeiting stamp ring. Believed to be arch-criminals by nearly everyone, their midnight visit to Colonel Gumm at the Pink Chip Stamps Factory stirs alarm. Even Batman and Robin believe they are out for a piece of the action. Figuring the Green Hornet's goal must be the Gotham Gothic, a rare and valuable stamp, they trail him and Kato to the Pink Chip Stamps Factory. But when Colonel Gumm and his men make giant stamps out of the visiting crime fighters, it appears Batman and Robin will be doomed to the same fate.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=95TNYwv4lCU At 2:45 you can see Bruce Wayned looking at his stamps. He needs tongs, though! Quote:
Batman" Batman's Satisfaction (1967)
Colonel Gumm moves out of the Pink Chip Stamps Factory, taking its owner Pinky Pinkston along as a hostage. A message hidden by Miss Pinkston in a bowl of alphabet soup directs Batman and Robin to the International Stamp Exhibition. Though the Green Hornet and Kato will be attending to try to expose Colonel Gumm, Batman and Robin believe they are out for personal profit. The misunderstanding has the two sets of crime fighters fighting each other while the real criminal nearly makes off with the exhibition's rare and valuable stamps

Let's not forget Dracula. In real life, Bela Lugosi was a philatelist. Here's a classic photo showing him working with his stamp collection: |

Nobody mentioned Francis Cardinal Spellman, Archbishop of New York, whose collection was the nucleus of the museum that bears his name: http://www.spellman.org/ |

Was George Roosevelt not a stamp collector? I recall having seen auction offerings with reference to George Roosevelt. |

Here's another: Quote: Theodore E. Steinway (1883-1957), of the famous Steinway piano family, was a member of the Collectors Club of New York and Board of Trustees of the Philatelic Foundation. In 1952, was awarded the first Lichtenstein Medal for his efforts in the field of philately as well as his contributions to the growth and prestige of the Collectors Club. Mr. Steinway was perhaps the first prominent stamp collector to embrace topical or "thematic" collecting. He not surprisingly mainly collected stamps depicting music. I'll also add this quote: Quote: King Alphonso XIII of Spain, King Victor Emmanuel III of Italy (who was more famous as a coin collector), King Carol of Romania, King Edward VIII of England, King George VI of England, and Queen Elizabeth of England are among the many royals who have or are collecting stamps. Prime Minister Winston Churchill, Field Marshall Erwin Rommel, President Herbert Hoover, Academy Award winning actor Ernest Borgnine, President and "Five Star General of the Army" Dwight D. Eisenhower, and opera star Lily Pons are but a few of the thousands of celebrities who were also stamp collectors. ...taken from this newspaper article: http://www.milforddailynews.com/new...xzz1lnFjgA8H |

I believe I heard mention of Gary Busey being a stamp collector but that's (in my opinion) highly debatable just due to the focus and attention to detail that is required but who knows really. I seem to remember an interview where he made mention of his childhood collection but who really knows for sure? |

Thanks wt1 for finding out about Steinway. Here's a little more info on him: http://www.philatelicfoundation.org...steinway.htmI'm going to see how many of these famous stamp collectors can be found on stamps. (New thread possibly?) I've done a PowerPoint presentation for boy scouts working on their merit badge and I had a slide that mentioned a few of the most famous (Queen Elizabeth, FDR, John Lennon). I'm going to add some more of the people mentioned in this post. Many thanks to all who have contributed! |

Gary Burghoff (Radar from MASH) is also a stamp collector. I used to have a videotape of a program he hosted about stamp collecting! |

L. Frank Baum, author of the OZ books was not only a collector, but according to Wikepedia "By the time he was 17, Baum had established a second amateur journal, The Stamp Collector, printed an 11-page pamphlet called Baum's Complete Stamp Dealers' Directory, and started a stamp dealership with his friends" |
