Joe, thanks for digging that info up!

My husband has been reading the Oz books to our boys for years now. He and the older boy are on book 46 (although only 13 or so were actually written by Baum). I would love to read some of Baum's stamps pamphlets.

The problem is a lot of stamp collectors don't want the attention of being a collector to the general public. The idea is that its a private thing and could effect what ever that person is working on like public office or building a business .Collecting to some is a escape from other important daily duties.

This opens up a new line of thought. How many of you are undercover collectors? Collectors who don't let it be known that they are collectors to the general public

I can think of two reasons why some people keep their stamp collecting to themselves:
  • Negative perceptions of stamp collectors by the public.
  • Fear that being known as a stamp collector might attract unwelcome attention from thieves.

Another famous stamp collector is Simon Wiesenthal who collected classic stamps from many countries and also had a collection of postmarks and postcards from different towns named Wiesenthal.

I didn't check all of the previous links, but did we include these prominent names on this list, based on the quote below?

Quote:
While President Franklin Roosevelt may have been the most famous U.S. collector, other well-known collectors include financial gurus Bill Gross and Warren Buffett, astronaut Sally Ride, actor James Earl Jones, author James Michener, explorer Jacques Cousteau, musician John Lennon, cartoonist Garry Trudeau and French President Nicholas Sarkozy.

As already mentioned by jamesw, Bart Simpson is a stamp collector.
Here is Bart, in the episode "Homer The Vigilante" telling his family... "the burglar even took my stamp collection".

Their response is... unexpected?

I remember hearing many, many years ago that Omar Sharif had collected, then sold for a great amount, mint full sheets of United Nations stamps, but couldn't find a reference to it on the web, so that story must be inaccurate.

BlackJag, there must be tons of information out there which isn't on the web which doesn't make it inaccurate.

And since when is everything gospel on the net?

For example Wikipedia articles even though for the most part accurate
but not always since they are written by individuals
who sometimes have an axe to grind or a political agenda or
political correctness or historical revisionism in mind.

Actually no different from that other source of information we had.
They were called books.
