Hi All

Here are a couple of U.S. Special Delivery covers from my collection.

Ordinary cover dated Feb. 10, 1936 with a L.A. S.D. cancellation as a receiver marking on the back

An advert cover also from 1936

A mystery on the back here. At first, I thought the small violet can ellation was an R.P.O. one, but I am not sure on this. It is inscribed "N.Y. & CHI, E.B. (?) / X 4 / DEC 3 / 1936 / HENRY H. PASS - -" (?). Does any SCF member have a suggestion for this small cancellation?

Thanks a lot

Chimo

I have looked through all my RPO guides. The only thing I can tell you for sure is that the NY&CHI cancel was done on the New York Central System.
The cancel is not a RPO cancel, as the RR never used East BOUND or any other BOUND
on their cancels. They used ED or WD for DIVISION.
As it is not listed in the RPO bibles,so since not listed as a RPO it may very well be as explaned below. The name looks like Henry H. Paul to me.

Additional information. !

I have found that the RPO cars when they arrived at the destination, left one man on board to look through all the sorting areas to see if anything had been left and not processed. He was called the "X" man. So I am thinking your cancel was the
X man on train 5 and was Henry H. Paul. He found this unprocessed letter and placed his cancel with his "X" number and name!

I think this is fairly accurate information, and if it is makes a rather unusual cancel. !!

try this link...

It has a nice small article on this...

Hope this helps.
