Speaking from experience, I'd say it should not take more than maybe 70-75 working hours to go through & count 100K stamps

Sorry, life is too short. I can think of much better things to do with 3 spare days than counting my stamps. I never have, nor will I ever count my stamps. To me it is not that important.
What is the end result anyway ? I will join the club and prance around a stamp show [or God forbid, my stamp club] with a badge telling the world I have 100,000 stamps. That would be just plain daft, I'm sorry.

@Londonbus1... The counting is definitely not because of the badge. It's about knowing what your collection is really made of, and keeping a record for it. This piece of information can be useful when buying/selling, for insurance purposes, for will etc. official/semi-official purposes.

But I respect your view. Each collector should do whatever feels good for them.

As I said before, I 100% side with Mike (LB1). I haven't the slightest idea of how many stamps I have, nor any interest of knowing it.
As for the purposes stated on the previous post "It's about knowing what your collection is really made of, and keeping a record for it. This piece of information can be useful when buying/selling, for insurance purposes, for will etc. official/semi-official purposes"

What about pre-1840 covers? Do they count? What's better to have in your collection just a Black Penny or a Black Pound or thousands of $ 0.05 stamps?

For me, the election is clear. I'll give you all the counting records and keep for myself a limited number of chosen items.

As for the insurance. Do you think that they'll start counting your stamps? If you pay the fee, they'll believe in anything...

While collectors might not know exactly how many stamps they have, all collectors I've run into inventory their collections in some way. I've found that being more organized (organised) is very helpful with my collection. I don't feel it is wasted time at all to count up the stamps. It saves time wondering about what I have and avoids unwanted purchases. Many collectors go much farther and inventory every catalog number (and positions, color variations, etc) they have. More power to them. Anything to avoid buying unwanted duplicates is a good idea in my book however one keeps an inventory.

Counting different stamps isn't for the money or the time, it is for the fun of it.

That's the bottom line. ...The fun of it... There's no need to for us to convince anyone that one way is better than another way. Count stamps if it's fun. Count stamps for whatever reason you want. Don't count if it's not appealing. We're all going to do want we like anyway.

Earlier in this thread I objected to some of the discussion because it seemed to me that some people implied that collecting high numbers of stamps by catalog number was somehow superior to other ways of collecting.

There's nothing wrong with collecting by the numbers--- I used to collect that way too, though I'm sure my numbers were never even close to 100,000. Now I collect 2 countries, a theme, covers, postmarks and miscellaneous items I just like for aesthetic or other personal reasons. My way to collect is, of course, superior ……for me. Many others have made it clear in this thread that their ways of collecting are, of course, superior…for them.

As landoquakes says, 'it is for the fun of it.'

Karen

I like counting my stamps because it gives me an idea of what I have and how I am doing as far as completion with each country. I have tried to inventory my US collection by catalog number, but never completed it because it was just too boring for me. Right now I am at 34,000 stamps from A-Kirbati. It has taken me almost a year to get to this point in my reorganization process.

Notice that as you expand your worldwide collection the value of the per stamp price increases .For example a person can buy 1,000 worldwide stamps for about 1/2 cent per each, but as the collection increase so does the value per stamp .I have seen were a worldwide collection got up to a point were the per stamp has gotten as high as .40 cents ............so as one's collection numbers increase so does the value of the over all pricing ........{just a crazy theory of mine that I watch}

Keep counting km41566 and keep us posted on your progress! I save ads like floortrader has posted. I will have to dig mine up. When was the 200K auction? That seemed like a pretty good deal to me especially since it was 1975 and earlier. There had to be some pretty good stuff in that one.

LAND....-----That was the Daniel F.Kelleher stamp auction Dec. 8 2004 .......notice that it doesn't say ALL-DIFFERENT,so you have to think it could be some "feeder albums" included in that 200,000 number {that missing word makes all the difference in pricing}
I hope im making myself clear to everybody when im posting that 200,000 stamps is not the same thing as 200,000 ALL DIFFERENT.
