Clear readble Postmarks of Travancore, are few and far between,
I get around 1 good Pmk per 25 stamps.

Travancore Postmarks
REGISTRATION Pmks

In Travancore , Registration of letters, was for the first time introduced in 1041 M.E. (Malabar Era) (1865-1866)
The reg. Fee at that time was 7 Chuckrams
(57/14 of a Brit. Indian Rupee..whatever that means )

T.A.D. = Travancore Anchal (Unchel) Department. = Travancore Post Department.
REG.= Registration
3 CHI / 91 = 19th August 1915 (CHINGAM)

From my collection
30 KAR / 95 = 16th August 1919 (KARKATAKAM)

Any corrections welcomed.

The established exchange rate of currencies of Br. India and Tiruvitamkur was:

1R=28½ Chakram/456 Kashu

Ref. Some Observations on Travancore Postal History
Narayanan Shankaran Mus.
The Philatelist (Vol.XXXIII No.3 12/1966); p.81

So, 7 Chakram was equivalent to ¼R or 4A.

I have a Travancore question. My Scott Classic shows a #31 1ca on 5ca slate purple. Does this really exist? The Steiner pages do not provide a frame. This seems to be a Scott catalog error because I would expect this stamp to be between #29 which is also a 1ca on 5a and #30 which is a 2ca on 10ca. Perhaps this used to be a minor variety of #29? or better yet, really is a minor variety that is listed as a major?

Same question for #8A and #O52F .. are they real major varieties???

Rod, according to Scott, #31 is the same as #29 except slate purple instead of chocolate.

Thanks,
So Scott type A8
The image I have shown, is possibly the slate purple.
Certainly not the chocolate.
(Scanner colour discrepencies not taken into account)

Slate purple does exist Gibbons #58 1932 (low CV 1993)

When Tony McGillycuddy was around, we could bounce things off him.
Best I can do.
I found Travancore colours and shades almost maddening.

I found the long India States thread and it helped me verify #8A exists, but apparently the Classic catalog still has issues to this day in that area.

#29 is A8 1ca on 5ca chocolate and #31 is 8A 1ca on 5ca slate purple according to 2019 catalog.

#O52F is A2 3/4ch violet with 13.5 mm wide SERVICE overprint, as compared to #O52 which is 13 mm.
