Hello, I have gotten interested in the Austrian newspaper and feldpost stamps lately. I got these in the mail today. My question is this--I don't have a Scott A-B catalog so can someone tell me how many stamps are in each of these sets? I would like to complete these sets so this information will be very helpful.
Thank you as usual
David

The only way I can give you a simple answer is to let you know how many different denominations exist. For many of these stamps, there are numerous paper/perforation/overprint varieties. You will need to directly consult a catalog if you want those details.

I will do that for the first few pics to let you have an idea. The remaining pics come from several different sets and is just too much for me to itemize for you, sorry.

Pic 1-2: 19 denominations

Pic 3:
R1 -- S1,4-5 Emperor Karl I: 20 denominations
R1 -- S2 Emperor Franz Josef with KUK FELDPOST ovpt: 21 denominations
R1 -- S3 Emperor Franz Josef with no overprint: 25 denominations (not including 2 color varieties -- 27 stamps in set), 1K and higher denominations are a different design but included in the counts)
R2 -- S1-4: 4 denominations (check for the numerous perf varieties)
R2 -- S5 (stamps inscribed "MILITARPOST" are listed under Bosnia & Herzegovina in the Scott catalog): 3 denominations (the 15h stamp will show Empress Zita)

Hope the above will give you a rough idea. If you really want to complete those sets, you really need to get hold of the Scott catalog.

k

David,

I don't have a Scott, but I can give you a Michel answer.

First set -- Republic of German-Austria 1920/21 Mercury newspaper stamps

Michel lists 19 in the series, 7 of which have a minor paper variation (thick grey paper versus thin white paper). You have 17 of the 19 in the basic series (you have two 2 Heller), missing the 30 Heller and 45 Heller.

Second set -- Austria-Hungary 1917/18 Kaiser Karl I Feldpost

Michel lists 20 in the series, 8 of which have 2-3 variations due to different perfs. You have 3 in the basic series, the 5 Heller, 12 Heller, and 80 Heller.

Third set -- Austria-Hungary 1915 Kaiser Franz Josef Feldpost Overprints

Michel lists 21 in the series. You have 1, the 5 Heller.

Fourth set -- Austria-Hungary 1915/17 Kaiser Franz Josef Felspost

Michel lists 27 in the series, 2 of which have variations due to different perfs. You have 1, the 15 Heller. The 15 Heller is one of the two with perf variations, and one variation (11 1/2 perf) catalogs for significantly more (€35 vice €0.10).

Fifth set -- Austria-Hungary 1916 Mercury newspaper stamps

Michel lists 4 in the series, with 2 of the 4 having 2-3 perf variations. You have all 4 (2, 6, 10, and 20 Heller). Check the perfs on the 2 and 20, because the value can vary wildly.

Sixth set -- Austria-Hungary 1918 Kaiser and Kaiserin Feldpost

Michel lists 3 in the set. You have 1, the 10+10 Heller.

Seventh set -- Republic of German-Austria 1919 Mercury newspaper stamp overprints

Michel lists 5 in the series, with the 2 Heller having 2 color variants. You have all 5. You have two 10 Hellers in different shades -- Michel recognizes both yellowish-red and orange shades, but doesn't currently catalog them as separate issues.

Eight set -- Austria 1920 Carinthian Plebiscite overprints

Michel lists 19 in the set. You have 4, the 20+40 Heller, 40+80 Heller, 50+100 Heller, and 80+160 Heller.

Ninth set -- Austria 1921/22 Mercury newspaper stamps

Michel lists 8 in the set. You have 7. You're missing the 75 Heller.

More like obsessive-compulsive. It's a curse, not a blessing!
