AT COIN SHOP TODAY, I PICKED-UP SET OF THREE 1976 OLYMPIC 999 SILVER STAMPS. THESE WERE SOLD JUST AS 1/2 OZ SILVER BARS. ON BACK THESE 3 SILVER STAMPS ARE MARKED: Canada Post, 16 GRAMS, 999 FINE SILVER.
fyi... 16 GRAMS = .51 Troy oz silver
This ebay item is exactly what I got, but no box or paper stamps, just the 3 silver bar stamps.

anyone have details on this 1976 set, like how many made & current value of just set of (3) 1/2 OZ SILVER STAMPS?

Canada Post did push these during the 1976 Olympic Games held in Montreal.

In my opinion, I usually stay away from the silver, bronze and gold prints. From what I have heard over the past umpteen years is that they do not increase in value that much and on several occasions, I heard that some collectors could not even recoup their original cost (?)

Just another 'gimmick' to get my money as far as I am concerned.

recoup their original cost (?)
do you know original cost of this 1976 set (actually made in 1974) & how many set made?
At least they will hold value of 1/2 OZ SILVER BARS...
Just hope silver goes back up to $50 oz!

Take your chances if you want.

I personally have heard stories where collectors could NOT recoup what they spent on them.

fyi...the silver melt value of these [3] 1/2 OZ (16g) SILVER .999 BARS = $45, that's what I paid.
if silver goes back up to $50 oz, then silver melt value would be $75.

i just want to know original cost of this 1976 set (actually made in 1974) & how many sets were made?
you cannot go wrong if you stick with .999 silver & gold, I see stamps for sale for even less than face on ebay.

I have to be honest and state that I did not realize that the silver content was that high.

Maybe I am thinking of the silver reproductions produced by different companies in the past. They were more like a 'foil' type of production.

At any rate, I keep away from gimmicks - call me an old time stamp collector, I don't really mind that <G>

Yes...These were sold by Canada Post in 1974,
not the thin 'foil' type of production from unknown companies.
They are 16G each of solid 999 SILVER and all 3 have the same serial number on back.

My guess is that less than 5,000 sets of these were sold?

Hello PENNTSTAMP, welcome!

My Canada specialized Unitrade stamp catalogue 2005 does not list these. Maybe newer versions do? Maybe this is a coin catalogue type of thing?

These were sold by Canada Post along with the same paper version of stamps as a set.
There is no coin value to them, like a $5 Silver Maple Leaf in a coin catalogue.

Here is some background on the "Precious Metal Stamp Sculptures" program.

Quote:
Olympic Stamp Sculptures

The tradition of creating works of art to honor and commemorate the Games is as old as the Games themselves. Canada in its own way maintained that tradition, for never before had any postal administration authorized the reproduction of an Olympic postage stamp in precious metal.

The Olympic stamp sculptures represented the creative collaboration of some of Canada's leading artists and craftsmen. In all, five exquisite series were minted: the first four reproduced series I through IV of the Olympic action stamps, and the fifth and final series commemorated the official ceremonies. It depicted the opening ceremony, the Olympic Flame and the medal ceremony.

To protect their rarity as collectors' items, the stamp sculptures were available to subscribers for a limited time only. They could be purchased individually in gold, silver, or bronze; in sets of three stamps of each metal; or in a combination set of one stamp of each metal.

The sizes and weights of the stamp sculptures were as follows:

1st issue — dimensions: 24 x 40 x 1.5 mm; 24 kt gold, 2.25 Troy oz; .999 fine silver, 1.5 Troy oz; bronze, 1.5 Troy oz.

2nd issue — dimensions: 30 x 36 x 1.5 mm; gold, 2.25 Troy oz; silver and bronze, 1.5 Troy oz each.

3rd, 4th and 5th issues — dimensions: 30 x 36 x 1.5 mm. Each gold stamp contained 23.33 grams in 24 kt. Silver stamps and bronze stamps
weighed 15.55 grams.

The Olympic stamp sculptures were extremely well received by the public and much acclaimed by collectors. But on December 31, 1976, despite continuing orders, Canada Post was obliged by law to withdraw them from sale.

Here is an ad for the first issue from the June 8, 1974 edition of the Montreal Gazette. It looks like your set originally sold for $56.

Hi All

The current edition, Unitrade 2012, does not list these either.

There are probaly not many of the first issue that were sold/exist. they only sold first issue from the June 8, 1974 to August 7, 1974 plus the silver set originally sold for $56....high price!
Some sets were maybe melted the few times over past when silver hit $50 oz because their value was $75 per set
