These are fakes - they were done a long time ago - the device was probably never in the post office. Things that 'look like precancels but are not' are certainly annoying. For a century the info on what is bad and why has been hard to come by. The answer to 99% of the problem is on the horizon. There is a fakes catalog in preparation that should be available within a year.
I have never owned any of the Earee Album Weeds books so I cannot say for sure. I do know that the upcoming fakes catalog from Bill Cummings will replace all existing scholarship on the subject.
chasa, That is awesome news, after getting back into the hobby and realizing that there are just as many fakes and there are genuine stamps, I have searched and searched for info on these.
