1871 Ceres 25 c. Michel lists no types (I don`t know if Scott or SG does?), so here`s a picture from Y&T 1978:

according to these I have a type 3, plus an interesting flaw (unlisted, maybe in specialized catalogue?)

the spots on the petals can be seen especially on the upper right corner (were there are 2 of them). But it`s interesting the broken circle also. I wonder if this is listed somewhere? Soon I`ll post another with flaw under nose. Any comments welcome.

My 2003 Scotts has a note that this stamp exists in 'three main plate varieties, differing in one or another of the flower-like corner ornaments.'

No pictures or anything else. Perhaps a newer edition elaborates?

1871 Scott 58 Type I Type III

Here is a pic of my Type I and Type III 1871 25c blue/bluish "Ceres" taken from my France 1849-1900 blog post.

http://bigblue1840-1940.blogspot.co...49-1900.html

The 2011 Scott Classic Specialized 1840-1940 catalogue only states the three types as jamesw said, but the 2009 Maury illustrates the types and gives them separate catalogue entries (Maury 60 I, 60 II, 60 III).

I could find no mention in the 2009 Maury of other flaws for this stamp, unfortunately.

Thanks! It`s a nice Type III Jkjblue, the flaw up-left is much clearer. It`s interesting that in 1978 Yvert&Tellier mentions (hope I translate it well), that: `three plates of type I and two plates of type II were completely reconstructed. The exact number of type III plates are not determined yet with certitude.`

(Trois planches du type I et deux planches au type II ont eté completement reconstituées. Le nombre de planches au type III n'est pas encore déterminé avec certitude.')

Thanks Bujutsu.

The blog attempts to explore the question....

A is for Aden and Z is for Zanzabar... Now what is between?

France is an interesting country (stamp wise), and if I wasn't a classical era 'generalist", I would be tempted to focus on their issues.

I am astounded how much better the Maury catalogue is for France compared to the Scott.

Are you aware of the quality of the Ycert et Tellier catalogue? I assume there is one! I have nothing for France at the moment.

Jamesw, the picture for types is from Yvert & Telier 1978. It`s pretty detailed and helpful. For France I use it with Michel (Michel only because it`s in colour- I first identify year of issue, then go to Y&T for types, errors, more information). I don`t know how much they`ve changed the outlook, probably new editions are in colour but unavailable for me here. Even so I found it useful & never seen Maury.
Here is another 25c Ceres with large white flaw under nose (Type I). I`ve checked it and it doesn`t seem a damage (scratch) of paper.

1862-71 perforated 1c olive green on pale blue "Napoleon III": Die II
See the "smoke" from of his mouth? Maury mentions plate flaws similar to this (But from the nose) for the 1c "Laurel" issue stamp known as the "a la cigarette" flaw.

Wadmalatz, I don't have any "Ceres" with flaws around the nose/mouth, but it is reported in Maury for the 1c "Laurel" issue. And I have this flaw around the mouth on the 1862-71 1c olive green on pale blue "Napoleon III" stamp.

The "Maury" (Ceres & Dallay) catalogue

Wadmalatz and Puzzler, what I like about the Maury is it is in color, with closeups of the flaws or types. I don't have a Y&T to compare.
