Looking for a new area to collect ? Heres one you might consider OR NOT ! From 1906 to 1966 the Maldives issued 200 stamps...i guess in 1967 the cork popped and from 1967 to 2006 they issued...Twenty Six Hundred and Eighty-eight stamps...some of the souvineer sheets might be a bit difficult to locate..but I am sure the Maldives is doable !

Hi,

I had a look at independent states of about the same size as the Maldives in terms of population, and the Maldives produce on average 46 stamps per year, which is 4.5 times more than for instance Iceland. Doable yes, but at what price?

The winner in this respect, and by a large margin, is Guinea with 149 stamps per year.

Klaus

Wouldn't our sets of worldwide stamp catalogs be much lighter without some of these countries?..Albums also...as a "worldwide collector" I do not go out of my way looking for cancelled to order stamps..so I have to admit there are wastelands of empty pages in my worldwide albums.....

Phil, I too look for such 'doable' areas, although I stop at typically 1985 - 1990. I notice the same 'pop' happened to Australia as well around late 1980s and 1990s. I'm starting on Portugal (till 1985), Italy (till 1985), Netherlands (not sure when to stop yet). Any Asian countries other than India that you can suggest which are 'doable' on a budget?

Thanks
Ram

I think Guinea was where I saw a sheet celebrating Chelsea football club's 100th anniversary (London based football club). When you start commemorating sports teams half way around the world, you've gone too far!

Ram, I stopped Netherlands around 1998..thats my last album pages..not an expensive country to collect...a few 19th century stamps are pricey...but I don't have to be 100 percent complete..if you shop around you can get the semi postals for a fair price...

Indeed they would. I am using the online catalogue of Michel, so catalogue size is not really an issue for me.

When collecting worldwide one could, for those countries, limit to definitives, there I find 26 issues from the Maldives and 25 issues from Guinea.

This was Grenada, set of 20 stamps (sic) issued on Dec 28, 2005.

If doable means a reasonable number of issues, then here's a list, with number of stamps until 1990 (according to Michel). I did not check the Middle East countries.

Below 1000

Hongkong 604
Malaysia 439
Myanmar 306
Nepal 511
Pakistan 811
Papua-New Guinea 630
Singapore 618
Ceylon/Sri Lanka 946

1000-2000

Bhutan 1379
Indonesia 1371
Cambodja 1192
South Corea 1232
Laos 1343
Thailand 1399

Well, if you're collecting simplified, Jasdan

and Wadhwan

with one stamp each, though Jasdan won't be very cheap, and Jhalawar

with two, reasonably priced stamps, are all doable. Of course, the trouble starts if you want to go beyond the one-of-a-kind. The six varieties of the Jasdan 1 Anna listed in Gibbons are catalogued at a cool £3000 ...

I also collect the Maldives, sometimes from approvals if the price is right. Or if they come in some type of lot.

Are faked overprints known of the 1906 first definitives, Scott No. 1 to 6? If so, are there particular spotting features? Are certificates advisable for this set, or for the high values? Thank you.

Can anyone tell if there is a typo on the 'Stampforgeries' page Geoffha posted above? Both Edward 3 c says 'Forgery'. I was thinking maybe the one on left is genuine, for comparison to the forgery on right?
