Thanks Laophil. The usual African suspects have been issuing sets of stamps of Patas monkeys, chimpanzees, and galagos; the suspects being Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, and the Central African Republic. Time for some Patas monkeys: |

Thanks Laophil for that selection. I think the ones that I posted, on the left may be the second no recognized species of patas - they have those dark noses. Here is a selection of baboons: the endangered guinea baboon on the single stamp MS, and on the other MS, chacma, yellow, olive and hamadryas baboon. That only leaves out the kinda baboon, another recently added species and so far, not on any stamps - it lives in Angola and Zimbabwe. |

Very beautiful and attractive Gorilla stamps and thanks for sharing! love them all Keep them coming! Much of our knowledge about gorillas' behavior comes from Dian Fossey's research. Dian Fossey (1932–1985) was an American zoologist who undertook an extensive study of mountain gorilla groups over a period of 18 years. She studied them daily in the mountain forests of Virunga in Congo and later in the Rwandan side of Virunga, initially encouraged to work there by anthropologist Louis Leakey. Her 1983 book, Gorillas in the Mist, combines her scientific study of the mountain gorilla at Karisoke Research Center with her own personal story. Fossey was murdered in 1985, probably by Gorilla poachers. In my collection, several stamps about Dian Fossey. Here are two from Palau (the first in the world) and Mozambique. Virunga Parc with mountain gorilla, Congo, 2005. "Gorillas in the Mist" is a 1988 American drama film directed by Michael Apted and starring Sigourney Weaver as Dian Fossey. It tells the story of Fossey's work in Rwanda with Mountain Gorillas and was nominated for five Academy Awards, Lesotho, 1991. During her research, Dian Fossey studied several aspects of the Gorillas behavior like... Communication... Maternity... ...and using tools. |

Thanks Laophil! Your last post, showed the snub-nosed golden monkey, China's pride and joy - but there are two, maybe three other snub-nosed species, all very rare. Here's one of them: This is the Yunnan black and white, or black snub-nosed monkey (Rhinopithecus bieti). The third species is the gray SNM, while, only discovered in Myanmar in 2010, there is the Myanmar SNM. They have not yet been on stamps yet. These are from The Gambia: first, a chimpanzee; second, guinea baboon, green monkey, senegal bushbaby, patas monkey, and red colobus. The Gambia does not issue as many wildlife stamps as some other African countries, and therefore, these issues can be quite pricey - but us primate fanatics will eat dry bread rather than miss an issue (although I do not have the famous 1980 Year of the Monkey stamps of the PR China, but I have a used one; which at least I know is genuine - the market is afloat with false reproductions ....) |
