Hello all,
Here is a canceled example of Germany Scott 302:

With a legitimate cancel, this stamp has a Scott catalog value of $300 (without defects). I look at this stamp, and it seems to me the cancel is little too neat for 1920s Germany. It doesn't have that sloppy look you get with a rubber handstamp canceling device. I'd like to hear your opinions.
Regards, Robert

I have the same impression. The cancel appears too nicely placed.

Soft criteria,I know, but...

The cancel is too light in my opinion (should be darker).

The cancel looks wrong to me. I have some which I know to be legit and they all have indistinct, blurry dark cancels. On mine it looks like the postmaster wanted to murder the stamps, he cancelled them so uglily. It is much too clear, in my opinion.

Also, the cancel is conveniently placed to miss the important
location ("AFEN", could be Ludwigshafen ?) and date. I consider
any stamp over $100 CV without an expert mark a fake.

I have no doubt this is a fake cancel. Can't see the date, can't make out the placename and most importantly: it is way too neat for a cancel of this period.

Thank you all for your responses. I've had this stamp some 30+ years in my collection with the intention of getting an opinion about the cancel. I agree, the cancel is bogus for the time period.
Thanks again, Robert
