Hello,
ICan anyone tell me anything about this cance? I have not seen this particular one before.
Thank you
David

P.S. For some reason I have yet to figure out I can't seem to paste individual scans from photo bucket. I ended up having to link the entire album in order to get these photos pasted here. The first two photos, the flag cancel and the scan of the postcard are the ones I am wondering about.
Thanks again

David,

I can try to find it in my German cancel literature, but I just moved and my books are somewhere in the middle of the Pacific. I'll bookmark this post and get back with you in a month or two if you don't get an answer in the interim.

Is there anything on the reverse that might help with location or date?

Hi PostmasterGS. The front is just a mountain scene, The Hindenburg stamp dates between 1932 and 1939 depending on which issue. I can't make out the date on the cds tough. I wish I had more for you and I appreciate your help.

Hi to all
Although he was living in exile in Holland by then, I would say it is probably the Kaiser's yacht Kormorant, and the cancel is probably being used to save money, and by then the yacht would have been the official yacht of the Government.
Regards
Horamakhet

David,

Your cancel is a Flaggenstempel (flag cancel) of the type used from 1 July 1928-1945 on ferries of the Gjedser-Warnemünde Line, which ran a ferry service between Gjedser (modern Gedser), Denmark, and Warnemünde, Germany.

There were four major versions of the G-W Flaggenstempel cancel. The initial three cancels depict the ferry from the starboard bow.

These three can be distinguished by the letters preceding the date:

"F.b" -- used on the first trip of the day
"F.h" -- used on the second trip of the day
"F.g" -- used on special, unscheduled trips (rarest variant)

Yours is the fourth variant, introduced in 1930 and used until at least 1943. It primarily differs from the previous versions in that it depicts the ferry from the stern. It's only known with the "F.h" letter combination.

Catalog for a legitimately used, fully intact cancel of the fourth type on postcard is about €70.

The ship in the Flaggenstempel is the railroad ferry, Schwerin.

The Schwerin is also depicted on a German stamp, Michel 657 of the 1937 Winterhilfswerk Issues.

I stumbled across another reference for the ferry flaggenstempels today, so here's an update.

The fourth variant of the Gjedser-Warnemünde flaggenstempel showing the ship from the stern can also be found with the "F.b" prefix.

Also, and most importantly for this example, the ferries of the Trälleborg-Saßnitz Line also used a flaggenstempel cancel depicting the ferry from the stern. The Trälleborg-Saßnitz Line ran a ferry service from Saßnitz, Germany, to Trelleborg, Sweden, from 1897-1944.

The Trälleborg-Saßnitz flaggenstempel can be found with prefixes F.A-F.C (to Sweden) and F.B-F.D (from Sweden).

The destination (Karlfeldtsgatan 2, Göteburg, Sweden) means this is likely a Trälleborg-Saßnitz cancel.

As an added bonus, here's the Google Street View shot of the destination.
