Just read about the new stamps to commemorate the first GB golds in the Olympics. Fantastic achievement, but is this just too many issues, too quickly, sacrificing quality of design over a cash raising opportunity? What do you think? (sorry, couldn't add a picture)

To paraphrase a rant I've posted on another forum this morning, as I've said repeatedly Royal Mail treat collectors as a cash cow and this decision is motivated more by revenue considerations than anything else.
These Olympics sheets and FDC's were marketed beforehand as 'subscribe to the FDC's and Mini Sheets and get the 20th Free!' Assuming a medal tally of 19 golds (as per Beijing) the price would be £143.64.
When you look at the quality of what is being produced you have to wonder what you are paying for. Bradley Wiggins is invisible under his helmet on his stamp and the Peter Wilson (trap shooting) stamp only shows the back of his head!
Sorry, overpriced, overhyped and over extending my good will towards Royal Mail. |

It is going to get expensive quickly - At £3.60 a miniature sheet and with 14 Gold Medals won - just over £50 so far. Then you might also want a single of each.... Although they are expensive I like them - I won't be buying them but if I had some spare dineros I would be very tempted. I have posted up some of the others here. http://www.stampsoftheworld.co.uk/w...edal_Winners |

Anyone given thought to a purchase and divide ... I could fund a set of singles. |

Cal I might look at it once I know how many golds are won - I would rather make one trip to the PO. Lets see how things are looking at the end of the week and I will start a new thread to see if there is any interest. I do know that at the end of the week we should be able to buy singles from the PO. |

Back to Victorian times at the post office! There were 29 gold medal winners stamps. The stamps were self-adhesive 1st class in miniature sheets of six like the Andy Murray sheet below. If you wanted to buy a single stamp at post offices (which Royal Mail said should be available) then the staff (where willing) had to use implements first used in Victorian post offices to separate stamps... scissors!Three margin copy anyone? |
