Hello All,

I have been looking through my Mi's and Scott's Catalogues looking for this one and have not been able to locate it: may be catalogue blindness. Any and all help would be appreciated.

I was also curious about the paper as it appears to be ribbed/laid on the backside.

There is no gum so I assume it is used, but do not really see signs of a cancel. The black ink around the stamp appears to be from the overprint which is raised black ink (hand-stamp?)

I have not done a watermark test yet.

Thank you all in advance for any information.

"Without colonies, is Germany not viable?" or "Without colonies, Germany is not viable"

It's clearly a political message, but from who?

I've never seen this overprint, and judging by the message, I don't think it was officially issued. It's either a fantasy, or some kind of political party overprint.

I hope someone out there knows for certain!

Brian

Brian,

Thank you. I did an Internet search, but came up with only German written websites. So, being I cannot read the pages I am still lost. I did find one image of the same overprint used on piece with two other stamps, but it was the 100 and not the 80 on the envelope.

Thanks again.

Privately made propaganda overprints. There's actually an older thread here on SCF that discusses the two overprints.

This can be found on several stamps of this series. Also on the same stamps: Gebt Deutschland seine Kolonien wiederi (Give Germany her colonies back). Almost certainly right wing nationalist propaganda against the loss of colonies in the Treaty of Versailles.

Possibly produced by a former Austrian painter Who knows!
