I've posted this one before, but it may be the first step toward getting people NOT to use the mail but rather telephone instead!

Now here's a curious thing that I'd like to query our SCF members about: The above cancellation from Australia in 1937 clearly shows the word "INSTAL" with one "L";

Yet I found this example on-line of a 1938 cancellation from Australia that uses a similar slogan cancel but shows the word "INSTALL" with two "L's":

Why?

I have a catlogue of West Australian slogans wt1,
I'll have a bo-peep in there and report back.

Nope, not employed in Western Australia

It's a Victorian thing, not surprising

I spell install with two L's here in Canada, and I believe it is an English way of spelling it, so probably the same throughout the Commonwealth. The one L might be a mistake or perhaps either way was / is used.

From the Merriam-Webster dictionary, there are two spellings, with and without the second L. The original meaning seems to have come from

Quote:
1 a : to place in an office or dignity by seating in a stall or official seat

Webster, I think, worked on shortening the English words to an easier to use spelling.

I suppose it depends on where you learned your letters, which one you consider to be correct.

Also, from Merriam-Webster is this link suggesting that "Instal" (with one "l") is a British variant of "Install" (with two "l's"). Just curious why in 1937 the one usage was acceptable and in 1938 they changed it.

If it wasn't so late of a usage and if it were a US example, I'd say it might have originated back to the Simplified Spelling Board. What a mess it would be if the English language (in the US, anyway) ever adopted such changes. For anyone not familiar with that part of US history, here's a synopsis of what was planned, but (thankfully) never adopted:

Here's an Irish example that I had posted earlier, showing an update in accepted spelling from "shew" to "show".

And I'm sure Chas could show us some examples of the precancels marked both Pittsburg and Pittsburgh.

Just found my copy of "Aliens must report their addresses during January". I thought everyone from outer-space just "Phoned Home".

Only a Partial, but "Sales Abroad Make Jobs at Home". I wonder how our Politicians would argue over this one today?
