I think (hope) that this is a US cancellation on Brazil #97.

Scott says that #97 was issued in 1888 and replaced by different issue by 1890.

So...does anyone out there know if this cancellation makes sense as US from that time period?

Any help greatly appreciated.

It's not a U.S. cancel; many countries used that style, including Great Britain, Portugal, and apparently Brazil too.

Rats!...wishful thinking.

The Portugal/Brazil connection makes sense.

I got all jazzed up reading about foreign cancels here http://www.brazilphilatelic.org/for..._cancels.pdf The 12 looks similar to other numerals (page 14), but the stamps with these cancels are earlier than my #97.

Thank you.

On a US football killer, in most cases, the bars are horizontal rather than vertical. My guess, this was cancelled at one of the larger Brasilian cities.

For what it's worth,
my collection of over 1000 Brazillian stamps,
there is not one example of a barred numeral killer.

I would like to see evidence of their existence in Brazil.

This probably is a "port of entry" cancellation from New York, placed on the stamp instead of on the envelope as was more usual. As far as I know this type of numeral cancels was used in the period this stamp was issued.

P.S. the picture was lifted from a great article about foreign cancellations on stamps from the Brazilian Empire I found on the internet.

Hmm... I totally missed that link and mistakenly thought I had found something new. At least it is at a different location, but obviously the same document: http://www.selosefilatelia.com/Past...-cancels.pdf

I didn't even notice the cover in the BPH article...the mysterious #12! This one seems to be over the stamps too - they look like a pair of faded #85 or #81.

This was a spur of the moment ebay purchase...I'm feeling a bit better about it.

Thanks all!
