Stamps With Camera's Or Photographers

There were quite a few stamps issued in 1989 celebrating the 150th anniversary of photography. Several have not been posted yet that I can see....

Brazil, 1989, Scott#2203 depicts a variety of photographs and mentions Daguerre, Niepce, Talbot, Bayard, and Florence.



Surinam, 1989, Scott #844-846 a set of three depicting Daguerre, Niepce, and an antique camera.



And finally Poland, 1989, Scott #2937 40z depicts shilouette of photographer Maksymilian Strasz (1804-1870) and #2938 60z showing a camera shutter as the iris of the eye. I have a used 2937 but lack the 2938, so this is a scan off the web.

This 1968 issue from Romania shows a stylized shutter. Scott #2040 commemorates the 20th anniversary of the Federation Internationale de l'Art Photographique, an international organization of national associations of photography. More than 85 national associations are members, comprising nearly one million individual photographers.

I just rec'd the following issued in 2000 by Jersey. Scott #787
One in a series of four depicting Lilly the cow enjoying tourist activities such as dining, sunbathing. #787 shows her taking a photograph with an SLR camera. I suppose Lilly is something of a mascot or symbol for Jersey.



While inserting this new arrival into my stock pages, I recognized that another issue I have from from Jersey has not been posted. Scott #1309 (among an issue of five #1306-10) which came out in 2008 to celebrate the centenary of the Jersey Eiseteddfod. The others depict music, dance, theatre, art, literature, but this one is for photography and shows a modern digital SLR and an old view camera. My scan shows a non-postal sticker attached to the stamp as issued.

At risk of overdoing my posts in this thread, here is another that also arrived in today's mail as a pair with selvage. Have to confess I am rather taken with it.

Italy, 2017. Scott #3457. From a set depicting various vintage scooters, here is an atmospheric view of a Lambretta driven by a young lady who is being photographed by a young man down at the coast. This is a big stamp, about 40 x 50 mm. Perf scales at 11.

I just rec'd a FDC of a 2005 French Andorra issue commemorating the photographer Josep Alsina (Scott #603, SGF 658) which depicts an SLR hanging from a shutter, and out through the window is an image taken by Alsina of a truck in the snow.

It is a bonus that the FD cancel depicts a camera as well.



While I'm at it, here is another French Andorra issue, from 1999, Scott ##513 celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Fédération Internationale de l'Art Photographique (FIAP) (International Federation of Photographic Art). Same organization celebrated in the 1968 Romania issue I posted earlier. This one shows a stylized aperture.

The stamp honors A. V. Meiyappan (1907-1979), an Indian film producer and director and a pioneer of Tamil cinema. The design depicts his portrait and a vintage film camera.

Malta
Joseph Calleia
July 10, 1997
Joseph Calleia (1897-1975) was a Maltese-born American stage performer and film actor. The design shows his portrait and a movie camera.

Joseph Calleia reminds me of Gene Wilder....


Another from French Andorra arrived in my mail yesterday, this one from 2004, (Scott # 584) a Europa "Holidays" stamp which depicts a photograph on a framing background of 35 mm camera film

Switzerland 2014 from a set of three stamps celebrating Swiss Cities and tourism is one for Luzern showing a viewfinder as a young tourist tries to focus a selfie with the city in the background.
Scott #1524-26 is the set; I don't have the number for this one specifically.

Rigel had earlier posted the stamp from Chile showing the street photographer bearing an overprint of $15.

Here is the original 10 peso issue of 1985 without the overprint (Scott #697b). I got this in over the holidays.
Then a 1986 issue overprinted in red for 12 pesos (Scott #770b) Finally came the 15 peso, overprinted in black as Rigel posted. The issue may have been 1987 (per the Scott entry for #771b). Chile suffered from severe inflation running about 20% per year at that time, so 10 pesos in 1985 would require 15 pesos by 1987.





Interestingly, Chile returned to the same theme in 2008 with a series of occupations - mostly on the street - which were shown as caricature drawings. One is, our friend the street photographer again, issued paired with the peanut vendor. (Scott #1497a is the photographer and 1497b the peanut vendor). Arrived in my mail yesterday.

The peanut vendor looks to me like he is pushing a small steamship on a trolley, so I could not recognize it from the stamp. Must be a Chilean tradition to decorate the peanut cart that way. Neat.

Here are the photographers Ahmet (1874-1959) and Ismet ((1884-1957) Sevki, the first Cypriot photographers. A 1998 issue from North [Turkish] Cyprus SG # 459, 460; Michel 465. Perf. 13.5.

This is a somewhat strange stamp in appearance.
Ethiopia, 1977. Scott #821.
This is the highest denomination in a group of five stamps commemorating the Ethiopian Relief and Rehabilitation Commission which was working on drought and other disasters...
It shows a strip of film, a camera, and an Ethiopian crouching between two eggshells. I suppose the eggshells are symbolizing a re-birth or the birth of new hope.

celebrating workers in the arts, media, and independent professions. There's a photographer with SLR in background.

There are quite a few stamps showing underwater scenes, tropical reefs and such which have photographers with underwater cameras in the background.

This one I just got in from the Comoro Islands is representative of that pattern. The fish shown however, is a Coelecanth, very rare and almost always in water much deeper than scuba divers ordinarily go.
Issued in 1975 Scott #130. This was the last stamp issued as "Archipel des Comores." The Comoros then became the Federal and Islamic Republic of the Comoros and began putting "Etat Comorien" on their stamps. This particular stamp and a number of other 1971-1975 issues were then overprinted with "Etat Comorien" in which guise it is Scott #147. I hope to get one of those someday.

Here from Cuba is a 2010 stamp depicting a scuba diver with camera (Sc #5074) from a series of six on underwater photography. All six show camera film in the background of the design, but this one shows the camera. Perf 12.5 x 12.5.

The next is Scott #5075 an imperforate souvenir sheet in the same overall issue. This one depicts a diver working on an undersea camera which presumably mounts to a ship.
