I'm attempting to build a collection of cacheted first day covers of the U.S. Iwo Jima (Marines) issue (Scott 929).

So far, I have acquired 14 different cachets and through a search of internet offerings I have identified another 11 different types.

However, I understand that the Mellone's catalog referenced in the subject line lists some 60+ different known cachets for this stamp.

Before I spend the $49 to buy a copy of the catalog I'd like to hear from any members who have seen or used Mellone's catalogs as to their utility.

For example, does the catalog show images/drawings of each different cachet for a given stamp issue, similar to the Scott catalog, or are only a few images given with word descriptions provided for the rest?

Any help you can give me will be appreciated.

Steve

Have you checked out this site?

Prices are high, but they do identify a number of the various cachets as outlined in the Mellone Catalog. Of particular note is that several examples may have the same Mellone Catalog ID Number, but are known in different colors, which creates yet another sub-variety. There are also the occasional "unlisted" cachets that aren't included in the Mellone catalog.

It can be very challenging to collect them "all".

Well, that's what I have too. Using the four-volume set, I found many a rare cachet 25 years ago. But they are darned hard to sell nowadays.

Thanks everyone!

Doug, email sent.

wt1, not only are there different colors of the same cachet, there are also at least two different postmarks that were used.

Doug,

I received the delivery failure notification at around 5 am. I just forwarded it to the address provided above so you could confirm that the email address the forum has on file for you is correct.
