I would never have guessed that the advertising piece was for a company called MALCO. Jim |

Mal-co tires are safest when used on an automobile which does not move, such as the Chevy Nova. I apologize for including a philatelic advertisement lacking the requisite attached cover with no disrespect meant to the Aussie who could make a Nova va and va quite well. To make up for that oversight, here is a different Nova ad cover: Edit; whizard, thanks for the added info below. Luckily for philately there have been many a company, if not an individual employee, that saved their correspondence. |

Parcelpostguy There was a huge amount of material that came from the Dickie's family. They owned a logging company and apparently did not throw away any correspondence. |

I will add another cover and I apologize in advance for the lengthy description. This 1870-80s cover is interesting and unusual in its strong non-business-related message. Although little is known about the background of the early women's rights message, it looks like Denman operated a Milwaukee variety store. The addressee is Francis Ellingwood Abbot (1836-1903), a founder of the Free Religious Association and first editor of the radical journal, the Index. The FRA was formed in 1867 in part to be a "spiritual anti-slavery society" to "emancipate religion from the dogmatic traditions it had been previously bound to." They rejected all dogma and reliance on Scriptures or creeds, teaching the truth is open to every individual. |

It appears to be the Boston 99c Store. From: Milwaukee Illustrated: Its Trade, Commerce, Manufacturing Interests, and Advantages as a Residence City ... Google Books |

It's been a while. Although not the prettiest, this c.1876 Blatz cover has nice franking and is an early cover from a famous Milwaukee brewery. Jim |

Here are two advertising covers. The first is a promotion for Chase Brothers, a nursery and seed company in Rochester, NY. It is posted with two US Scott 206 with a Dec 17, 1883, Rochester cds. The second is more interesting to me. It's a template ad promoting the Wisconsin State Semi-centennial celebration in Milwaukee, which took place from June 27 to July 2, 1898. The cachet depicts the Milwaukee City Hall; a figure that I believe stands for "Forward," which is the Wisconsin state motto; and, to add a little whimsy, a clown and a policeman (partially cut off) where the stamp is affixed. A number of companies used this cover to promote themselves. This one was sent by Kersting & Apel Co., a short-lived Milwaukee-based importer and market maker of coffee and teas. It's posted with either US Scott 252 or 267 depending on the watermark. The date stamp is a Barry machine cancel with an oval postmark and diagonal line killers. The bottom photo is of the upper right of the back of the cover. You should be able to make out the pin impressions, which is a hallmark of a Barry machine cancel. |
