Two Companies using the same corner and two different all over advertising, all incoming to Mendocino.

Here's a few I've found recently -

Shame this one was allowed to get so grungy.

W. L. Douglas Shoes, Brockton Massachusetts, with a mute (missing central date plug) 1896 CDS cancel:

A bit of history for the Brunswick cover:

"Mother and I lived in Iowa in the flat upstairs in the building where the drug store had been for at least a year during 1906 and 1907. Father was working in Brunswick and mother used to get letters from him on Wright & Gowen letterheads. Their envelopes had a pic­ture of a full rigged ship under full sail on the lefthand side. I would go next door to Mr. Spears to get the mail and if there was a letter with a ship on it I hurried home for I knew how happy mother would be to hear from fa­ther."

This next one is rather elaborate. The first image shows the front of the cover, folded together. The three images after show the cover when opened up, revealing three pages. The last page of text also shows the tab which is inserted into a slit, closing the cover. The tab is the candle and it fits into the candle holder. The last image is the back of the cover.

Beautiful stuff. I really like Temperance covers.

That temperance cover is well known and popular; the J Ellwood Lee cover is one of a number of allover multicolor covers from that medicine company which has an 1898 medicine stamp (RS290-RS294).

A bit of phrenology to think about

I like how you gave this thread a little bump with the phrenology covers, Jenny. (get it????)
