I recently purchased a bag of world wide stamps and found this odd ball amongst them. I would like to gain any information about this stamp, to include the Scott's or Mikel's number, as well as nation and local and anything else anybody can tel me about it. Thanks, Shelly Ann Desertfox1a

There's no denomination or inscription -- are you thinking it's missing that? It's probably just a label. |

Common experience for the "Dune" stamps, it will be a label in a Souvenir sheet of some sort. Just like to identify from which set, possibly early painters.

Rod, This one was a challenge, but that just makes finding it more fun. Ajman MiNr 2370A from 1972. Found it on the German ebay -- here. Also available on the Australian ebay -- here (different seller name, but same German firm -- they do business on ebay using multiple seller names, sammlerposten and prophila among them). |

Wowza ! get outa here.........! You are beyond awesome Postmaster Collectors of the absurd and the abstruse, thank you, endlessly. Been searching for that 7 years. Details: Attached labels, left and right. 1972 (Nudes) Central vignette : Statue by Canova. Antonio Canova 1 November 1757 – 13 October 1822, was an Italian neoclassical sculptor, famous for his marble sculptures. Often regarded as the greatest of the neoclassical artists, his artwork was inspired by the Baroque and the classical revival, but avoided the melodramatics of the former, and the cold artificiality of the latter. |

Central Vignette "Venus Italica" 1804 The producers of the Ajman Labels, went armed with a camera within a Museum somewhere. Venus appears in other Ajman stamps (The catalogue reference pencilled, is not Michel) |

Unknown. Arrived within San Marino mixture. Appears white wove paper, possibly clear gum. (reverse has multitude hinges) Perf 11. Franco Bollo C Dieci. Could it be Sardinia Sc#11 ? Thank you. Looks like Sc#11 but it should be imperf? Perhaps a forgery? |

Rod,
I think you're correct -- has to be a Sardinia 11 that's been perfed in an attempt to pass it off as an Italy 9. |

With that perf gauge, it has to be fake. Also, the genuine perfs on Italy 1862 stamps are cut really sharply so you might think those are fake.
This one was likely made from remainders of the Sardinian issues, so the embossing and gum is correct. I think the reason for mint stamps being so cheap is that it may be impossible to always tell remainders from genuine. The embossing here is badly done or from a worn die. It's usually more lifelike, and the details don't really ever smash down by just soaking and pressing. |
