Bumping this much older thread. I re-scanned the stamps and found a guide line at the top, and what appears to be several engraver's slips on the 2d red. Not listed in ACSC, but now noted in my collection.

I have three of this stamp (mint, used, FDC). Sure enough, all three have lines in the margin.

Why would there be any reason for engravers to be involved in this part of the process? The transfer die would be rolled onto the plate by the platemaker, so there might be residual bits of layout markings - all straight and regular. I suspect most of these non-straight lines are scratches occurring during the use of the plate. Thoughts?
