Stamp Purgatory is:
Trying to collect Paraguay stamps issued after 1960.
Scott catalogue helps some, but is greatly lacking in detail; especially stamps from the 70s through the 1980's. Also is missing many issues.
Michel catalogue does not help at all!
I printed the Steiner pages and found that they have hundreds of errors… especially stamps from the 70s through the 1980's.
I've been told Stanley Gibbons is not much help either.
I once met a guy from Paraguay at a stamp show and when I told him I was collecting Paraguay stamps... He replied "Good luck, you'll need it!" He hadn't been able to keep up with the stamps from his own country!!

Hi to all Unfortunately Australia has become like that now. It seems to issue stamps for the silliest of reasons. But like Paraguay it does it with the collector in mind. When you look at a Gibbons catalogue the pre-decimals fill 24 pages, (excluding the states) but from 1966 onwards we have over 120 pages, and that does not include Christmas Island, Cocos Keeling, Norfolk or any other dependencies. We it comes to stamp issues, Australia has joined that ranks of the third world and only has collector revenue in mind. Just look at our latest Christmas Stamp, it is ugly. Regards Horamakhet |

Can anyone answer that? Why so hard to find any Paraguay after 1960. The only one's I see are souvenir sheets. |

One of Stanley Gibbons' old rules for including stamps in their catalogues was that the stamps had to be issued for, and be generally available for, bona-fide postal use. This rule was clearly made to exclude stamps issued by countries purely for sale to collectors for profit. If that was still the case most of the modern Great Britain stamp issue would be excluded from their catalogues. This prolific issuing of usually poorly designed stamps is the main reason I concentrate, with a few exceptions, on the 1840 to 1940 period covered by the Scott Classic catalogue. I wish good luck to anyone collecting modern stamp issues.

TIMM------Its hard to believe there are hundreds of errors with the STEINER PAGES, I have been using them for my worldwide collection and find very few errors. They have a contact number or thru their website to report any mistakes and trust me on this ,they correct those mistakes quickly to their software . You may be in a area of collecting that the catalogs and dealers are not sure of what is floating around as real postal issues as Terry mentioned above . |
