In another month or so, I'll have to renew my subscription to Linn's.
The last couple times I've renewed, I've stayed with the PRINT edition, but I'm thinking it's time to save the extra money and switch to the PDF version.
I enjoy reading books on my iPad, but PDF files don't work as well as EPUB files because of the scrolling, pagination, etc.
Two Questions...
1. Has anyone heard if Linn's is planning EPUB in addition to PDF? 2. Has anyone tried using Calibre (or another utility) to convert the PDF to EPUB?
And since I'm 99% certain the answers to those two are NO, here's one more Big Question...
Have any of you coders developed an automated way to grab the Linn's PDF every Monday afternoon?

I didn't think the online version of Linn's was in PDF format? They have some kind of specialized viewing tool. |

Good point, StudyStamps --
I didn't clarify --- you can view it online, or from inside the viewer, there is an option to download it as PDF, but now not direct link to the PDF files.

I switched over to the electronic version a couple of years ago and have no regrets.
While I have never tried to download an entire issue, I regularly save multi-page articles by choosing the print option and saving to PDF rather than sending to the printer. (You can specify the page range you want when printing, e.g., pages 35-40. To save as a PDF is an option from the Macintosh Operating System rather than something that Linn's supplies. My memory is that Windows offers similar functionality.) |

StudyStamps: You're right again -- the PDF link isn't there. I don't read the online version often, but I'm almost positive I remember it being there when they first went online. Either they removed it, or I'm losing my mind... I use BullZip to "print" PDFs of webpages I want to save. But that just adds more hoops for me to jump... KirkS |

Hi guys - easy way to save Linns Stamp News Monthly as a pdf is just to press the print button, select the pages you want to save, and then when asked what printer you want to use select "print as pdf". The document won't be text searchable but at least you can view it locally on your computer, tablet or phone. I'm fairly certain the option to print as pdf is available as long as you have Adobe PDF Reader installed. |

I print Linn's to PDF and read it on my iPad. The resultant files are pretty big, at 80-100 MB. You CAN'T convert these to ePub, since the PDF is basically has an image file per page with no actual test to convert to ePub. Amos has an application for Coin World that looks pretty interesting. I don't collect coins, so I don't get that magazine.
I have sent them emails asking if they would release an app, or at least make REAL PDFs available for download, and the answer I pretty much got was "no, but maybe in the future."
If AMOS released a PDF, the file size would probably be around 10 MB, instead of 100, and would be searchable. |
