As I look at more and more mounted stamps, I am wishing now that I went with clear mounts years ago instead of black.

I remember going from Crystal Mounts to Showguard and thinking how cool they were and how the black made the stamp pop on the page.

I don't know why my opinion has suddenly changed.

Perhaps it will change back in a few weeks. We'll see. I'm really wishy-washy on this stuff.

I have the opposite opinion. I've purchased a couple of collections in the past that had clear mounts and I remounted them with black mounts. The clear mounts show the stamp frame which may or may not be compatible with the size of the stamp you're mounting.
One stamp may have almost no margins while the next stamp may have jumbo margins.

Black mounts cover the sins of the stamp album or stamp; besides the white margins look good against a black background as they make the perforations standout.

You are using the left side of your brain,
the critical fellow.
Stand back, take a deep breath, and re appraise.
or, take some time off from the opinion.
See if you feel like this in a weeks time.
Try a page of clear, and see how you feel.

I guess it would behoove me to get a couple of clear mounts and lay them out and ponder for a week or so. I'm not about to remount everything I have already.

But I am about to start up Ireland, and I thought I could go clear with that. I just hate the idea of keeping 2 different kind of mounts around.

Personally I prefer the clear mounts. I find the black mounts over power the page, and the clear let the stamps themselves be the stars!
Unfortunately, I do find the clear a little more difficult to find, but not impossible.

I like black because if frames each stamp like the miniature work of art that it is. Seeing the perfs so clearly is also a plus to me.

You are correct ... black mounts "pop".

Clear mounts are my favorite and one reason is because mistakes aren't as glaring.

Any mistake cutting, placing, or spacing between black mounts makes the page look "off". It's like looking at a picture, painting, or mirror mounted above a hearth that is perpetually crooked ... but you can't touch it. It would drive me crazy!

Either one works well, but for different reasons.

With clear mounts, the focus is on the stamp itself. When I look at a page, I really don't notice the mount as such.

And an imperfect cut or size mount is forgiving.

On the other hand....

If you have perfin stamps in your collection, perhaps the black background is more appropriate
