With thanks to Winston Sinclair for alerting me to this one-- I had a search on ebay in Philatelic Literature, but not in books-- this one never showed up in the Philatelic Literature area.

Best price I've seen-- I used the "buy it now", but probably should have put the same bid on the book and maybe would have paid less for it. You can find it from the philatelic literature dealers in the $200 range and up (and this is the deluxe edition with slip cover and gold pages), but the "buy it now" at $145 was a really nice price.

The Neinken book was published in 1972, and a lot of it is the same as the Ashbrook book from 1938. I was most interested to read and understand the discoveries that happened since the original Ashbrook 1c book-- and mostly how they figured out that the Type Va stamps were from plate 5, not plate 6 as in Ashbrook.

It is a shame that these older, out of print references aren't readily available at prices that the average collector or philatelist can afford. But it's become really obvious to me that if one is to understand the 1c Franklin issue, BOTH of these books are an absolute must.

So, I've got some major study and learning to do! This issue is absolutely fascinating, and very affordable-- you can spend a lifetime collecting just US #24, which can be bought for as little as a few bucks apiece on eBay-- but again, to understand the differences in the plates and positions, the references are very necessary.

Here is a picture of the book (taken with my iPhone, so the book is on it's side:

Thanks again to Winston, and to Art Launier for piquing my interest in this issue-- Ray

Great find at a great price. You guys fascinate me with your knowledge and wether its curls or pinks I always find myself looking harder for them. I may never become a true specialist because I treasure hunt opposed to really pick and choose. I will look forward to learning along with your readings as I know you'll pass down some helpful tidbits of info.

Ray,

Glad to see you take the plunge. Its an awesome book and supplements Ashbrook's work real nice. I know you will enjoy it.

BTW, I think I may have picked up another Va, this one unused, I'll see when I get it in hand and try and plate it.

However, that's both good news and bad news, for me.
1st the bad news. I'll now be competing with you on finding those elusive curls. ;)
2nd, the good news,I'll now be competing with you on finding those elusive curls. ;)

It is an outstanding reference work I have used for many years -- since 1975!; well worth your investment. It will pay for itself the more you use it.

I'm happy to revive this thread. A couple of weeks ago, I purchased the Ashbrook books on the 1c Franklin for $50 off ebay http://www.ebay.com/itm/2-volume-19...p=true&rt=nc - thinking I will be unlikely to find such a deal on Neinken's book.

Today, I was running my weekly search and found the Neinken book on Amazon for $50! I am stoked!

The Neinken 1 cent book is available for free download at the US Philatelic Classics Society website (along with a host of other valuable reference works) but there is of course no substitute for the real thing for most of us!

Of course, it's also fun to find covers or stamps illustrated in the book. I'm lucky enough to own this one! (40R1E, used to show the lack of imprint on the early state of the plate).
