In 1964 one could send a letter from California to Switzerland for 28 cenls! As of today it costs 46 cents to mail one across town!

In terms of purchasing power, 28 cents in 1964 equals roughly $2.00 today. 46 cents is not so bad.

According to the CPI Inflation Calculator, 28 cents in 1964 is equivalent to $2.07 today.

With the new US postage rates that have gone into effect today, one can send an international mailpiece for $1.10, a relative bargain in comparison.

Also, that 1964 cover shows a nice contemporaneous use of the 8-cent Goddard Air Mail Stamp (C69) issued on 10/5/1964 and a plate block of the Mayo Brothers Stamps (1261) issued on 09/11/1964. The machine cancel slogan postmark "Strike Back at Cancer / GIVE / American Cancer Society" ties in nicely with the Mayo Brothers stamp.
