Hi all - In my Afghanistan collection I have found a number of Afghani stamps with USA Cancels.

The first group was issued in 1957, and the cancels I can see years on appear to be 1958, and 1959.

Have a look - Any thoughts on how this occurred? - Were these mailed from an Afghan embassy in the US? -

These are U.S. Consulate "pouch mail" that upon receipt at the Dept of State in Washington, D.C. are cancelled and distributed to the appropriate person.

Hi Eric,

They were never postmarked in Afghanistan. The envelopes are sealed with the appropriate countries' postage (un-cancelled); upon receipt at the State Department in Washington, the pouch is opened; the mail run through a cancellation machine with the slogan 'THIS ARTICLE ORIGINALLY MAILED IN COUNTRY INDICATED BY POSTAGE". The only postmark received is in the U.S.

Hal

Just thinking outloud for a second. How much mail could possibly have been sent each year from Afghanistan to the US State Department via pouch mail?

Doesn't seem like it should be that much. But, maybe I underestimate the volume of mail that would have been sent.
