Update: I've received a response and another phone call from Linda, the clerk at our USPS processing plant. The postmaster designated her as the individual who handles these requests, but I would be able to present my cancelled mail at the plant or the downtown location.
So I will be heading out to the boonies to give Linda my application, which will be sent on to the district for approval. She's been very helpful, but I'm definitely glad I called before just showing up there! |

Update: I stopped out at the plant after work today and gave Linda my application and a sample design for my postmark. She'll send it in and, if it's approved by the district, assign me a permit number. She said she doesn't know how long it will take though - she's never had one of these before. She said it's kinda fun. |

Update: Linda just called me to let me know that she received approval from her district. That was WAY faster than I thought it would be! She was even able to assign me permit #4 - my lucky number! Now I can order my rubber stamp, and I'll soon be canceling my own mail. I think I may be more excited than I should be about this. |

Wow! That was a quick turn-around service by the USPS. Afterall, efficiency isn't their favorite slogan! |

I received my rubber stamp, and I believe I am all set to go! I sent a scan to my gal at the USPS and asked if there was anything else I need to do before I start canceling my own mail. =) |

Well, that's neat. Going to make and offer "First Day of Postmark" covers? |

Obviously everyone here has a second hand knowledge about cancelling mail before it is mailed, with one's own rubber stamp. I confess ignorance. I've never heard of this. Why would anyone want to cancel their own letter with a rubber stamp before mailing it? Somebody please come down to a fourth grade level and educate me. -IBFS |

Zuzu: What does the "E" mean in the LL corner of your MPP?
Actually, I'm surprised the USPS didn't put up more a fuss about the city and state. According to current postal regulations, there may NOT be a comma between the city and state in any official USPS postmarks. Yet they allow it in the MPP. Interesting.

Cal156, probably not first day of postmark, but I'm sure I'll be using it on my next Zutopia Post mailing. IBFS, check out the Mailer's Postmark Permit Club's website at http://www.mppclub.org/Quote: Did you know that you can cancel your own mail? With a free permit and an inexpensive rubber stamp, the United States Postal Service will allow you to cancel your own mail. Cancelling your own mail is fun. In addition, if you are a stamp collector, you can insure that the mail you send out has neat, properly placed and clean postmarks. wt1, I have no idea what the "E" is supposed to mean, but I wondered that myself. I'll try to find out from Joe LoPreiato, the gentleman from whom I ordered. I wasn't aware of the postal regulation against commas. What possible reason could they have for that? |

Zuzu, I am looking into this more deeply. But I must know how you filled in items 8a & 8b on the form 3615? The example on page 7 of the application has "12345" & "54321". What did you put there? |

Guy, you'll see on the front of the form, in the upper left corner: Quote: Two forms of identification are required when submitting this application. One form of ID must contain a photograph of the applicant(s). The applicant must enter the two ID numbers on line 8a and line 8b which is subject to verification by the postal employee completing the application. Social Security cards, credit cards and birth certificates are not acceptable forms of identification. I entered my driver's license number for Item 8a and my automobile registration number for Item 8b, and indicated each as such (i.e. XXXXXXXXXX NEDL). |

Just talked to the post office and the Post master is in Portland till Wednesday. But they are aware of the idea and said someone else started the process but never followed thru, which will not be the case here. So, will go on thursday to see the PM
