Hello All,
As you know most times finding things at an antique store is very hard to do and if you find anything it's really expensive even for dead common and damaged items. Occasionally, you do get lucky and the price cannot be beat. Yesterday was one of those days.

I was able to find five interesting Asian covers from the late 1940's - three from Japan, one from Thailand and another from Korea. all sent to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Japan cover #1 - They missed a few in the cancelling process, but none the less still very nice.

Japan cover #2 - nice full set of the Yoshino-Kumano National Park stamps plus others.

Japan cover #3 - Scott 457 from the souvenir sheet and block 421a plus others. (March 26th - just noticed a had a link error! duh!)

Registered Trang, Thailand / Siam cover
Front - Nice strip of four on front, but...

Back - ...28 more should do the trick.

Registered Korea cover
Front - Scott 94a in top corner. Sure lot of stamps on this cover.

Back - But wait! There's more! That's a lot of Scott 79.

Scott 79 shows a Tortoise Ship, 1st Ironclad War Vessel.

I'm not sure if the Japanese covers were sent to a stamp collector directly as they were serving a purpose - for admission applications, but probably either sent by a Japanese stamp collector or someone really trying to get the administration's attention so they get into the school. University admission departments are a great source of stamps and covers since they receive large volumes of mail every year and a lot from overseas.

The Korean and Thai covers have the multitude of stamps probably becasue that's all the post office had in stock and needed quite a few to be sent by overseas registered mail, especially if there was any inflation within origin country. An expert in that area can determine the postal rates of that time period as I don't know yet and still have to do some research. Granted there's some edge wear on the sides of the Korean cover, but most of the stamps are okay and most are in blocks and strips. Scott 94a has a Scott catalog of $80.00. There's also 46 of Scott 79 that catalog for $40 each. There's also a pair of Scott 93, but that stamp has a low value. Trying to determine a "value" for a cover like the Korean cover will be a real interesting challenge.

Great find. I especially like the Japanese covers.

Can I ask what you didn't get taken for?

If you'd rather not broadcast that, you can email me.

I see that your Korea cover is up for sale in the Regency-Superior Auction at the APS STAMPSHOW in August. It is a nice cover and for sure it will get a good price.

I am a frequent buyer at Regency, for the stamps I collect. I do collect Korea Empire prior to the Japanese occupation of the country, but very rarely touch the modern stuff, except for the early North Korea. I collect them. It is not one of my specialized country. I bought these two Taiwan Dragon and Horse stamps just posted today) at the Regency Superior's last auction.
