Peoples National Bank Check With Some Questions

Hello,
I enjoy revenue stamps, and odd items. I recently purchased this check at an antique store. I was wondering if someone could explain the stamp to me? It is a US check that must have been sent to NYC. It was the deposited in Societe General Bank West End Office? I don't understand the British Stamp?

It looks like the check was made out to someone in England and they cashed at the West End office. Austin Reed Co. is a clothier in the UK. There are several hand stamps on the back including Brown Brothers. Brown Brothers was an importer of linen from GB and they started their own bank to handle trans atlantic transactions. (say that three times)

A bit of interesting information on the writer of the check, Kathryn E. Spangler (b. 8-Aug-1882; d. 5-Mar-1963). She graduated from the University of Missouri, was a local high school teacher and later was the Henry County, MO Superintendent of Schools in 1921.



Kathryn E. Spangler never married but was a Past Grand Matron of the Order of the Eastern Star (1933) and was buried at Englewood Cemetery in Clinton, MO:



(By the way, she was the daughter of James M. Spangler, who was President of the People's National Bank of Clinton, MO, the bank from which the above check was written.)
