Now that we have a new Pope, I wonder how soon the Vatican postal service can get out a new stamp showing him! I also wonder how many employees their PO has, seeing as the Vatican is the world's smallest country!

Being catholic I didn't watch the whole electoral event but being a stamp collector I did think the same thing as to how fast they would do the stamps.

I would be more interested in any of the "Sede Vacante" issues. They are only vaid for postage during the transistional period.

Any one gets hold of an actual posted letter, has a real keeper.

March 13, 2013. (Romereports.com) The Vatican issued four stamps to commemorate this transitional period between the end of Benedict XVI's pontificate and the next Pope.

The value of the stamp is 70 cents in Italy, 85 for Europe, 2 euros for the Americas, and 2.50 euros for Australia. However their use is limited to the Sede Vacante period. When the new Pope is chosen, they will become collection pieces.

Hi to all
Just as an aside, reporters in Australia are saying that the new Pope called himself after St. Francis of Assisi, but I think that being a Jesuit, it is more likely that he is named for the Third Superior General of the Jesuits, who was none other than St. Francis Borgia. Yes he was one of the Borgia who ruled the Papacy.

Hi stampvirgin,
thanks for that info, St. Francis Borgia was also known for his humility, piety, and love of the poor.

Nells, I visited the Vatican two years ago during a short holiday in Rome, and of course took the opportunity to visit the post office. It's massive (no joke), as to service all tourists and pilgrims wishing to send a postcard home from the Holy See. There were tons of employees all over the place.

There is always St. Francis Xavier, founder of the Jesuit order which Pope Francis belongs to.

i was at the Vatican Post Office in 1961..mailed myself a cover! It was a great experience...had time to see the museum with the treasures and was "almost" crushed by teenage girls in the Sistine chapel when the doors opened and they carried the Pope !

Hi Smauggie

St. Ignatius de Loyola founded the Jesuit. He like St. Francis of Assisi was a soldier. Loyola was wounded in battle and while recovering he had only the lives of Saints to read. He was inspired and founded the Jesuits.

Wellp, the Pope arrived via postcard from Italy. Not Vatican, but it made me think about this thread!
