I still get pestered by Jamestown once in awhile! I'll get a mailer full of mostly junk so once I got sick of it and sent them some stuff they was trying to sell me but ones better centered and undamaged (unlike the ones they send me) along with a note that read something to this effect: "Here is what these stamps are supposed to look like, and with the money you charge, you'll probably be able to retire on these." I have yet to get another mailing from them...lol

I guess the approval houses were a mixed blessing...they were the gateway for many of us to stamp collecting...but boy a lot of them exploited innocent kids..well some of us were not so innocent..they messed with me so messed with them !

So what happened Phil? You kept them and didn't pay for them?

I also ended up getting approvals answering adds for the FREE stamps ( from Kenmore, Harris) but then stopped after one of them accused me of keeping the stamps without paying even though I had returned all of them.

I was really scared that a collection agency would come after me or
I'd get sent to reform school.

But I guess some kids did keep the stuff without paying

Lithographing I don't remember not sending back stamps from companies that I was buying from...i did hang on to their approvals longer than they would have liked...as an adult I did not return approvals that I did not request. When I was 10 or so the approval place would send perhaps 1.75 retail on sheets..they were not going to risk losing money with kids.

With the prices they charged, one paying kid could subsidize ten deadbeat kids

Good old Jamestown. I used to get approvals from them, I even sent them a list of what to send, they just never sent anything from the list. Therefore, I told them to stop. They did for about six months, then started sending stamps begging me to come back. Sorry guys, I have zero obligation whatsoever to return anything unsolicited, I sent them a letter and told them so, that any further stamps they sent would be considered gifts. They still send me a packet once a month or so and I never return any of them. Seems there's something about the definition of insanity, doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results?

Although I can't say that I've heard much about them in recent years, surprisingly the Jamestown Stamp Company is still in business:
