OK, my local stamp club has a huge bin of stamps that I borrowed to see if I could fill in a few holes in my collection. This would normally be a huge waste of time to find 10-20 stamps, but I had nothing better to do. In looking through my Great Britain, I checked various watermarks to see if I could find an elusive variety. These two stamps showed up, and I can't locate them in the Stanley Gibbons. Looking for some help here.

Both are 2 1/2 d version of SG 155. The left stamp has a watermark 165 (St. Edward's Crown). The right stamp with the cut perfs on top has watermark 179 (Multiple crowns). Both watermarks, however, are Inverted per the Stanley Gibbons catalog forward. I compared with the many other examples in this huge bin, and these are the only ones with this orientation of the watermark. I can only find a sideways description for both, though 574e is described as Watermark Upright. Any help with proper SG identification of these would be appreciated.

Not sure which SG catalog you are looking at.

From my SG GB Concise (it's an old 1999 edition):

left stamp: #544bWi (wmk 165, Type II, watermark inverted)
right stamp: #574Wi (wmk 179, Type II, watermark inverted)

#574e is for Type I.

Thanks khj. I'm using the Stanley Gibbons 2010 Commonwealth & Empire Stamps: 1840-1970. It doesn't list these two varieties. Any value to them?

My catalog is 1999. I'll give you the normal vs. inverted used prices.

544=25c
544b=50c
544bWi=50c

574=10c
574Wi=£1
574e=50

For the 2nd stamp, there is also a chalk paper variety:
574k=75
574kWi=85 (wmk inverted)

Thanks so much. I guess I'll have to keep looking, plus pick up a copy of the SG GB Concise Catalog.

I finished with the tub and found quite a few more inverts. As you can see, I was able to classify them per Scott and SG numbers. I already have a value for the 544bWi and the 574Wi. Is there anything of value with the remaining items? I think they are all pretty low value (maybe 4x normal value), but just wondering.
