So when Aunt Martha decided to sell the suitcase full of 3-cent stamps she'd tucked away for years, she couldn't get even face value. Dealers, Bednarczyk said, pay 75 to 80 percent of face value and then resell the stamps for a little bit more than that.

75 to 80% ? not three centers, more like 40 to 50%. Now if somebody wants to prove me wrong...... I know a guy that has thousands of these that are available

That's Allen's in Westerville, Ohio - about 2 miles from my apartment.

Maybe he'll buy mine at 75-80%! I have almost every stamp from the 40's and up to 2005 plus hundreds of sheets and booklets all mounted in mounts I got through an estate. Since I live in Canada and can't even use it, it's a huge dust collector. Off to Ohio!

My favorite Allen's marquee ad says "Watch Batteries - $7.50"

I'd love to waltz in there someday and scream "...$7.50?!?? I can go to Wal-mart and watch batteries for nothing...!"

Which reminds me of out local watch repair guys shop.

Outside the shop his sign says "Watch batteries fitted while you wait"

Not sure if he realises the dual meaning.

Allen's has evolved greatly since my first visit in the 1970s, when they were uptown. They do virtually nothing with stamps now, concentrating mainly on coins, bullion, and jewelry.

Practically any time you visit, there's a line waiting to sell (primarily coins or scrap gold) and they are very efficient in buying and processing, and probably the premier selling destination in the Columbus area, far ahead of other shops. Allen [Karn] himself passed away some years ago, but the present staff maintains traditions, and the shop is a real gem -- a bit pricey in some categories, but it's a big complex organization with a huge stock.

Reminds me of the time I got a fully warranted watch from the Mart for $9.50... Reading the fine print of the warranty I needed to send $9.50 along with the watch for postage and handling.

A watch for $9.50?? It would seem for that "bargain price" that it might just be out for repair for longer than it could be worn! I would perhaps look for better watch. lol !
