There was a horrible war in Sudan, so one-sided that it essentially became a genocide. This is why South Sudan has come into being.

Philatarium,

I presume that South Sudan will suffer the same fate if any of it's stamps are listed on ebay,

Who knows? ebay is not known for administering with a light touch when a heavy hand will do.

I would imagine that once the heat is off from the US government, ebay will gradually become more lax in this again. We went through this a few years ago specifically with Cuba (maybe the other countries, too? -- I don't recall), and ebay eventually started allowing everything again.

And, as much as I don't want to defend ebay on anything, it seems like for ebay to do anything but issue a sweeping ban is the only way they could administer it. Anything more nuanced would require knowledgeable staff people (and a lot of expense) to make informed decisions about what is actually covered by the US law and what isn't, resources ebay isn't likely to commit.

More info for those interested in trying to figure out what countries might or might not be under American trade embargoes.

I just looked at Cuba in the stamp section and there's only few new U.S. based listings for today and most of those are because the seller took out the space between the year and date in the title to fool the filter programs. There hasn't been anything new listed for North Korea since the 13th. Sudan is a near shutout with a couple of exceptions. Some older listings have been grandfathered in prior to April 9th and/or sellers might have been able to list items through mehtods other than TurboLister and the selling page online. I don't think there's a filter in place for Burma / Myanmar, Syria or Iran yet as there's numeorus new listings for those countries.

There's plenty of listings from other countries that do not have embargoes against these countries although I read from ebay seller cobbie10 that it looks like UK sellers are also blocked from selling stamps of Sudan (listing was pulled even though the stamp was pre-embargo).

Question is will U.S. buyers be able to buy stamps of prohibited countries from sellers outside of the U.S.? I ask as PayPal is also in on this ban and has filters that may prevent the transaction. I haven't heard of any yet except for Paypal transaction outside of ebay sales.

In summary, looks like the crackdown is focused only on Cuba and Sudan so far.

Delcampe has 38,000 listings (worldwide - international) of Cuba stamps at present. I didn't check the other countries.

Puzzler: Filter for ebay U.S. site only and the numbers drop a lot. Then put them in order by newly listed and the numbers drop down just to a few a day. A few are getting through by taking out spaces around the name like "1959Cuba" and others are probably using something other than TurboLister or the online selling page to list. Older store items have bene grandfathered in. Only three U.S. based Cuba listings made it in on April 16th. Four for April 15th.

Well, it would seem that the rules didn't do much good as some are still selling them. Weather the transactions will succeed is another question all together.

hello, it's a shame that you can limit the stroke of a pen collecting. the limitation of the stamps and coins of Cuba (pre-Castro) is not legitimate. more to write here must protest directly to ebay. not the first time this has happened. last time only the pressure of all that we change the law. paypal right now canceled the payment of any lot that says "Cuba". whatever. the embargo begins in 1962, not in 1492 when the island was discovered. pressure do but everything was well.............hola, es una pena que se pueda limitar el coleccionismo de un plumazo. la limitacion de las estampillas y las monedas de cuba (pre-castro) no es legitima. mas que escribir aqui debemos protestar directamente a ebay. no es la primera vez que esto pasa. la vez pasada solo la presion de todos logramos que cambiaran la ley. en este momento paypal cancela el pago de cualquier lote que diga "cuba". sea lo que sea. el embargo comienza en 1962, no en 1492 cuando se descubrio la isla. hagamos presion sino todo quedara asi.
