An interesting postal history read about the man who is said to have brought about the US Postage Stamp -- George Washington Hopkins:

While in Congress, Mr. Hopkins drafted a plan to create what was then called a Federal Postage Label. He carried this to the House of Representatives and it quickly passed. The first postage stamp was issued on May 6, 1846.
