Wellp, I finally did it... I went to a stamp show. This makes #2... my first was over 10 years ago. I may be older, but I am poorer! Here are some random thoughts and observations:
I was wondering why a stamp show would need to be 3 days long. Well, it occurred to me that you need 3 days in order to sit at every table and look at every item! The sheer volume of stuff is overwhelming!
Another thing I noticed was most people had a briefcase, or some kind of large bag. I wonder if these are filled with just purchased stamps, or trade fodder?
Most attendees were men.
Most of the vendors seemed nice. Most of the customers seemed to know the vendors...
It helps to know what you are looking for...
The framed displays... just how do those work? Are people actually competing?
It helps to have some money when attending a stamp show...
It is nice to see stamps that you only read about. Saw some $$ US Revenues. Some are much smaller in size than I expected!
If you need/want US postage and don't want to get ripped off, buy them at a show. No postage, no mark-up. Some even are discounted. I got a bunch of .18 stamps to use on my Postcrossing cards at face. Far easier and cheaper than
ebay.
Here are a few of the few things I picked up:
